Associate Director, Engineering Grant Support

Position

Purpose:

The Associate Director will catalyze major strategic research initiatives to support extramurally funded scholarship in engineering, focusing on Thayer School of Engineering. The individual will identify novel opportunities for research support, align with emerging federal sponsor priorities, connect faculty projects to resources, advise leadership, and coordinate activities within Grant

GPS and Thayer to ensure successful grant applications.

Responsibilities
  • Create strategic programs to develop complex multi-investigator proposals (>$10M), unite faculty across academic areas, and cultivate interdisciplinary research leading to new funding opportunities.
  • Incubate, develop, and refine areas of scholarly focus in collaboration with researchers, catalyzing new grant proposals within and beyond the Thayer ecosystem.
  • Engage graduate students, postdocs, and faculty individually or in shared-interest networks to build long-term strategies for sustained scholarly support, including faculty nominations for prizes and awards.
  • Strengthen the culture of pursuing grant funding for faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students across Dartmouth.
  • Marshal institutional resources and provide direct support for proposal writing, review, and revision.
  • Generate and implement strategies to embed Dartmouth’s goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion in research programs.
  • Work directly with faculty to address broader impact requirements of proposals and connect them to appropriate internal and external partners.
  • Identify, create, and cultivate strategic relationships with federal program officers and regional/international partners to generate opportunities for Dartmouth research programs.
  • Attend events and webinars hosted by federal agencies, sharing relevant insights with Grant

    GPS and Thayer faculty.
  • Collaborate with staff in identifying, writing, and submitting grants at Dartmouth, including the Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP), Dartmouth & Geisel/Dartmouth Health offices of Corporate & Foundation Relations (CFR), Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies, and the Office of Entrepreneurship and Technology Transfer, in coordination with the Vice Provost for Research and the academic deans.
  • Share research advances with internal and external constituencies regionally and nationally, in coordination with other outreach and communications offices at Dartmouth.
Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant area or equivalent education and experience.
  • 8+ years of experience working in complex institutions with significant grant‑funded activity.
  • Commitment to diversity and serving a diverse community.
  • Evidence of successful grant writing and grant management.
  • Experience working with academic leadership and grantmaking institutions at the international, national, and regional levels.
  • Excellent writing, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to engage intellectually across disciplines.
  • Excellent organizational, project‑management, and decision‑making skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of national and regional grantmaking institutions.
  • Knowledge of university research systems and scholarship career trajectories.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD.
  • Experience in higher education/university setting.
