The Director, Research Programs will design and implement strategies to advance the productivity of the Department of Epidemiology and secure and sustain funding for academic and programmatic priorities of projects led by Margaret Karagas. The role seeks and advises on opportunities that enhance research and scholarship in epidemiology, collaborates with private sector partners, non‑profit organizations, governmental agencies, and other Dartmouth offices such as the Tech Transfer Office.
Responsibilities- Develop, oversee, and propose grant and research proposals with significant scientific and administrative content.
- Draft and edit a wide variety of written materials, including grant proposals, manuscripts, correspondence, reports, and research summaries for internal and external stakeholders.
- Conduct research on funding opportunities from foundations, corporations, venture capital and other philanthropy sources; provide advanced analyses relevant to epidemiology funding.
- Assist faculty in aligning projects with funding opportunities and supervise grant application processes and publications.
- Coordinate fiscal monitoring and decision‑making to align research priorities.
- Engage with faculty, trainees, and staff to build long‑term strategies for sustained support of scholarly activities.
- Build, facilitate, and manage relationships with faculty, postdocs, and graduate students; organize and lead scientific communication workshops.
- Prepare and analyze prospects using internet search engines and other research tools.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Ph.D. or equivalent combination of education and experience in epidemiology or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience working in complex institutions on scientific writing and communication, including proposal development, grant writing, publication writing, and fundraising.
- Evidence of successful grant writing, proposal development, and grant oversight.
- Ability to write and convey scientific content with proficiency for an educated lay audience.
- Experience working with faculty members and grant‑making institutions at the international, national, and regional levels, particularly in the sciences.
- Exceptional written, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize work, multitask, and meet deadlines in a team‑centered, time‑constrained environment.
- Experience working with sensitive information and maintaining strict confidentiality.
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to engage intellectually with faculty and trainees across a wide variety of disciplines.
- Self‑motivated, independent, flexible, adaptable, and able to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent organizational and project‑management abilities with strong attention to detail.
- Comprehensive knowledge of national and regional grant‑making institutions.
- Knowledge of university research systems, scholarship processes, and academic career trajectories.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in a scholarly community.
- Knowledge of Dartmouth’s organization and academic, administrative policies and procedures.
- Fundraising experience.
