Associate Director, Engineering Grant Support
The Associate Director will catalyze major strategic research initiatives to support extramurally funded scholarship in engineering, focusing on the Thayer School of Engineering’s expertise. This role identifies opportunities for research support, aligns faculty projects with grant resources, advises leadership, and oversees activities within Grant
GPS and Thayer to ensure faculty grant success.
Location: Hanover, NH
Responsibilities- Creates strategic programs to help develop complex multi-investigator proposals (including projects >$10M), uniting faculty across academic areas and cultivating interdisciplinary research that leads to significant new funding opportunities.
- Incubates, develops, and refines scholarly focus areas in collaboration with researchers, catalyzing grant proposals and new initiatives within and beyond the Thayer ecosystem.
- Engages graduate students, postdocs, and faculty individually or in shared-interest networks to create long-term strategies for sustained support, including nominating faculty for prizes and awards.
- Strengthens the culture of pursuing grant funding for faculty, postdocs, and graduate students in research and scholarship across the institution.
- Marshals institutional resources, providing direct support of proposal writing, review, and revision.
- Generates and implements strategies to embed Dartmouth’s goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion in research programs.
- Works directly with faculty to address broader impact requirements of proposals and connects them with appropriate partners.
- Identifies, creates, and cultivates strategic relationships with federal program officers, regional and international partners to generate opportunities for Dartmouth research programs.
- Attends events and webinars hosted by federal agencies, sharing insights with Grant
GPS and Thayer faculty. - Collaborates with institutional support staff to identify, write, and submit grants in coordination with the Office of Sponsored Projects, Dartmouth Health offices, Guarini School, and Office of Entrepreneurship and Technology Transfer, guided by the Vice Provost for Research and deans.
- Shares research advances with internal and external constituencies regionally and nationally, coordinating with other outreach and communications offices at Dartmouth.
- Demonstrates professionalism and collegiality through actions, interactions, and communications that welcome all.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree in a relevant area or equivalent in education and experience.
- 8+ years of experience working in complex institutions with significant grant‑funded activity.
- Commitment to diversity and serving a diverse community.
- Evidence of successful grant writing and grant management.
- Experience working with academic leadership, faculty, and grantmaking institutions at international, national, and regional levels, particularly in the sciences.
- Exceptional writing, analytical, and communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to engage intellectually with faculty and trainees across disciplines.
- Excellent organizational, project management, and decision‑making skills.
- Comprehensive knowledge of national and regional grantmaking institutions.
- Knowledge of university research systems and the role of scholarship in academic careers.
- Ph.D.
- Experience in a higher education/university setting.
