Position Purpose
The Director serves as the primary point of contact for veteran and military‑connected students, fostering an inclusive campus environment. The Director provides information, referrals, and connections across the university, liaises with internal and external veteran support groups, and works with all schools to support veteran recruitment and retention.
Key Responsibilities (60% of time)
- Represent veteran and military‑connected interests within administrative departments and across campus
- Coordinate, develop, and execute policies related to veteran students
- Serve as a resource for enrollment management and retention efforts
- Advocate and participate in local, regional, and national veteran and military organizations and events
- Connect veterans to on‑ and off‑campus resources and stay current on veteran issues in higher education
- Bridge gaps between military‑focused efforts to enhance collaboration and inclusivity
- Collaborate with campus offices that support military‑connected students, employees, and alumni
- Advise student veterans and military‑connected organizations and clubs
Programming and Leadership (30% of time)
- Assess student veteran needs and develop evidence‑based services and programs
- Collaborate with key offices on orientation, graduation events, and other support initiatives
- Lead the Dartmouth Military Connected Advisory Group and the Veterans Day Advisory Group
- Lead cross‑departmental teams to improve pathways to success for veteran, military‑connected, and ROTC students
Recruiting & Retention (20% of time)
- Partner with admissions to develop recruitment pathways for military‑affiliated students
- Work with schools to support veteran recruitment efforts and develop targeted marketing campaigns
- Facilitate VA‑benefit certification and financial aid to remove barriers for veteran enrollment
Administrative (20% of time)
- Manage budget and supervise part‑time program staff
- Hire, train, and supervise student or temporary employees supporting veteran initiatives
- Develop, maintain, and enhance Dartmouth’s main veteran website and database
- Coordinate stewardship and recognition with donors and advancement partners
Additional Duties
- Demonstrate professionalism and collegiality appropriate to a welcoming environment
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 5–8 years of professional experience working with the military and/or veterans and military‑connected students
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within larger teams
- Strong writing, oral communication, and interpersonal skills
- Good judgment, the ability to manage high volume work and meet overlapping deadlines
- Ability to interact knowledgeably with students, staff, faculty, and professionals at all levels
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher
- Honorable military discharge
