Position Purpose

This motivated, key contributor will work in an interdisciplinary environment to plan and perform experiments requiring knowledge of molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics. The position requires the ability to set up and conduct experiments that may include, but are not limited to, assays and analyses, basic cell culture work and treatment response time courses, and recombinant DNA technology. The member of the lab will also be expected to assist with basic lab maintenance activities such as researching and restocking supplies, assisting with cell culture stock maintenance, maintaining orderly records of lab inventory, etc.

Proficiency with computer software and computer use is necessary.

Responsibilities (50%)
  • Conduct specified laboratory experiments/tests, utilizing a range of established methods, procedures, and techniques, e.g., genome‑wide expression analysis, molecular biology and cell biology techniques.
  • Accomplish necessary preparation of equipment and instrumentation for experiments.
  • Adhere to established quality control policies and procedures to guarantee the reliability of data.
  • Observe experiments while in progress, record observations, and troubleshoot as necessary.
  • Reconcile results that are disparate from anticipated findings, re‑run techniques as necessary.
  • Notify principal investigator of problems associated with experiments, measurements, or analyses and suggest changes to methods, procedures, or techniques as appropriate.
  • Maintain laboratory notebook, recording tasks performed.
  • Adhere to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/hazardous waste safety disposal methods.
Records (20%)
  • Collect and analyze data resulting from experiments and present findings to Principal Investigator.
  • Prepare appropriate and understandable representations of data such as graphs, charts, tables, statistical summaries, etc.
  • Contribute to the preparation of scientific manuscripts by preparing graphs, tables, and charts.
  • Conduct literature searches to develop insights into the significance of experimental results and to acquire information on new or improved methods, procedures and techniques.
Laboratory (10%)
  • Maintain day‑to‑day care and housekeeping of laboratory.
  • Wash dishes, restock, keep inventory, organize freezers and refrigerators, clean spaces, maintain cell culture room, autoclave waste, etc.
  • Check, calibrate and maintain equipment in working order, performing preventive maintenance at prescribed intervals.
  • Maintain records associated with laboratory activities, both digital and print.
  • Instruct others in laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques and provide technical guidance and direction as required.
  • Commitment to maintaining laboratory safety, adhering to Dartmouth EHS regulations, and good documentation practices.
Miscellaneous (10%)
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and positive working relationship with staff at all levels, co‑workers and students.
  • Self‑motivated and proactively engages with team members and contributes to a supportive laboratory environment.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree plus 2‑3 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two to three years of relevant lab experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, cell biology or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with molecular biology and cell culture methods, procedures and techniques.
