Position Purpose
The General Manager of the Department of Theater is responsible for the administration, coordination, communication, and planning involved in producing the department’s annual slate of shows, including Main Stage and all levels of student productions and noncurricular events such as workshops and collaborations with student organizations. While the faculty collectively determine vision, choose shows, define pedagogical principles, and vet potential guest artists, the General Manager handles day‑to‑day decisions, communications, budgeting, and troubleshooting required to coordinate all the components of a successful production program.
The General Manager serves as the communication node linking three groups – faculty; the Production Manager and production staff; administrative staff (Department Chair, Department Administrator, Academic Coordinator) – and works to support the department’s mission campus wide.
- Masters or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 5‑7 years experience in theater management.
- At least 3 years experience in theater education.
- At least 5 years of experience in theatre education.
- Terminal degree in a theatre‑related field.
- The GM is the department’s producing representative for its annual slate of shows, including the mainstage productions, student production slots, and any produced thesis projects. The GM is responsible for the managerial aspects of the season.
- Oversees the production manager, technical director, and costume shop manager and coordinates with the department administrator in the development and execution of production budgets.
- With the approval of the chair, negotiates terms with and hires creative personnel not paid by course count.
- Oversees onboarding and communication with creative personnel and visiting artists. Works with the department administrator to coordinate travel and housing logistics.
- Markets the season with the goal of selling tickets and attracting a broad audience to the department’s performances.
- Coordinates and enacts outreach to the campus at large about all department related activities throughout the year.
- Along with the chair and the department administrator, handles contracts, insurance, and other legal matters as they relate to the department’s season of productions.
- Advises and coordinates on problem solving and crisis management during production.
- The GM supervises the production manager.
- Supervises the production manager through weekly 1:1 sessions and other regular check‑ins, as well as guides the workload and helps to set the priorities of the production manager.
- Advises the production manager on supervision of their staff.
- At the request of the chair, provides feedback on other staff, particularly the department administrator, who works closely with the GM at times.
- Works closely with the department administrator to coordinate production‑related issues.
- The GM serves as the central communications and marketing hub for the department.
- In coordination with the department faculty and staff, creates and executes systems for outreach, including gathering materials for social media and making connections with people around campus.
- Along with the chair, ensures clear and thorough communication of planning, coordination, and communication about all non‑classroom department related matters to both external and internal stakeholders.
- Along with the chair, defines the marketing and external communication goals of the department, particularly as they pertain to the department’s annual slate of productions.
- Devises marketing plans and strategies that align with the department’s marketing and communication goals.
- Executes, manages, and/or delegates action items from marketing and communication plans.
- Acts as the communications liaison for campus, local, regional, and national partners – including the Hopkins Center, student groups, other arts departments, and others – in non‑classroom matters.
