position purposethe refrigeration / hvac technician ii installs, repairs, and maintains the college’s refrigeration, air conditioning, and chilled water systems; performs routine building maintenance services on hvac equipment for all college and athletic facilities; and provides troubleshooting services for off‑hour emergency response needs. The position also assists in servicing the ammonia refrigeration system in the thompson arena ice rink. The technician ii exercises a high level of skill in all aspects of the trade and assumes responsibility for complex assignments.
responsibilities- evaluate equipment conditions and perform repairs to filter racks, drain pans, and other components.
- demonstrate in‑depth knowledge of equipment impact on other building components and systems.
- perform preventive maintenance on heat pumps, air conditioners, reach‑ins, walk‑ins, ice machines, and cooling towers.
- trace and locate defects, determine repair requirements, and execute required tasks.
- modify, alter or substitute components to meet specified pressure‑temperature characteristics.
- keep records of refrigerant usage in accordance with epa standards.
- replace major components such as compressors, condensers, expansion valves, float and service valves, thermostats, coils, and drive assemblies.
- inspect and test hvac systems for proper temperature, operation, oil levels, noises, bearing temperatures, and component integrity.
- perform visual, audible and mechanical checks, tighten connections, splice lines, insulate wires, clean and lubricate moving parts.
- disassemble, repair and reassemble pumps, impellers, compressors, chillers, receivers, evaporators and cooling towers.
- perform basic plumbing work such as leak repair, unclogging drains, and faucet or flushometer replacement.
- work on hydronic and steam systems, including valve, actuator, insulation and leak repair.
- collaborate with the building automation shop to diagnose and repair systems, learn control sequences, and assist senior technicians.
- assist in starting and operating chilled water plants and other major cooling systems from a non‑operational status.
- mentor and train junior technicians, providing clear instructions and constructive feedback.
- high school graduate with some post‑secondary technical school training, or equivalent.
- minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in refrigeration and 3‑5 years in the electrical trade, or equivalent.
- universal license in refrigeration from a recognized organization.
- ability to qualify as a dartmouth approved driver.
- working knowledge of industrial, commercial and residential refrigeration and air conditioning systems, including low‑voltage electrical systems, refrigeration cycle principles, temperature measurement, refrigerant properties, heat transfer laws, refrigerant tables, airflow calculations, and pressure‑temperature characteristics.
