About the Company

Established in 1981, the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO) is the self-regulatory body that licenses and oversees general insurance brokers in Ontario. With a mandate to protect the public interest, RIBO regulates the professional conduct and competence of over 22,000 licensees across the province. As Ontario’s insurance broker regulator, we play a critical role in ensuring consumer trust and maintaining high standards within the profession.

Our core responsibilities include setting qualification standards, licensing individuals and firms, monitoring compliance, and addressing profession conduct concerns through our complaints and discipline processes.

We are looking for a full-time Auditor.

Position Overview

Auditors at RIBO have a key role in ensuring that licensees adhere to the requirements of the Registered Insurance Brokers Act
, Regulations, By-Laws, and other applicable legislation. This is primarily achieved through RIBO’s Risk-Based Audit Program. Auditors assess both financial and operational practices to evaluate compliance and take appropriate action to address any regulatory concerns identified through the audit process.

Primary Audit Responsibilities
  • Conduct preliminary risk assessments of brokerages selected for audit by analyzing existing data and applying established risk indicators
  • Identify key regulatory risk areas and design tailored audits using appropriate modules from RIBO’s audit toolkit
  • Request and review financial records and operational documents from brokerages; follow up for additional information as needed
  • Analyze documentation to detect issues such as equity shortfalls, trust account discrepancies, position report anomalies, and Continuing Education non-compliance
  • Interview brokers and staff to gather insights, clarify findings, and discuss potential resolutions or improvements
  • Recommend appropriate regulatory responses, escalating high-risk matters to RIBO’s Investigations team when necessary
  • Communicate audit findings clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing, using RIBO-approved templates and standards
  • Adhere to RIBO’s audit service standards, procedures, and professional guidelines
Other Responsibilities
  • Monitor emerging industry trends and contribute to the development of regulatory responses
  • Stay informed on the Registered Insurance Brokers Act
    , related By-Laws, Regulations, the Code of Conduct, and other relevant legislation
  • Provide feedback on internal processes, particularly within the Compliance, Conduct, and Investigations (CCI) function, and support continuous improvement initiatives
  • Collaborate with internal departments (e.g., Licensing, Conduct, Investigations, Policy) to ensure consistency and alignment on compliance matters
Qualifications
  • Candidates should meet one of the following profiles:
    • Professional Accounting Designation (CPA, CA, CGA) with 3–5 years of experience in financial audits or brokerage operations
    • Licensed Insurance Broker with strong experience in financial recordkeeping and operational compliance within a brokerage setting
    • Extensive Bookkeeping or Audit Experience (7–10 years), ideally within property and casualty (P&C) insurance or a regulatory environment
  • Preferred Experience:
    • Familiarity with brokerage operations and financial controls
    • Experience conducting audits in a regulated industry
    • Knowledge of P&C insurance products and workflows
Preferred Skills and Attributes
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Experience conducting interviews with senior staff (e.g., Principal Brokers) is an asset
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, time management, and organizational abilities
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Demonstrated professionalism, sound judgment, and discretion in handling confidential information
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Bilingualism in English and French is considered an asset
