Nurse Specialist Gynaecology Services

The role of the band 6 nurse in Colposcopy and Hysteroscopy is to provide clinically effective, individualised/patient centred care to those who attend the unit and their families. You will be responsible for ensuring care is delivered to the highest standards and is in accordance with evidence and national standards, working with the multidisciplinary team to achieve this. You will hold accountability for ensuring that your knowledge and skills are updated in line with Trust policy.
The band 6 nurse is required to show good leadership skills and participate actively in service audit and development whilst supporting and teaching junior members of staff and students.
- Leading and coordinating the unit in absence of the department manager
- Set standards for the unit and ensuring high standards of nursing care are maintained at all times
- Ensure all medical and emergency equipment is in a safe condition and ready for use as required
- Ensure faulty equipment is reported
- Ensure local standards, policies and procedures are adhered to at all times
- Escalate concerns to the departmental manager and/or matron if levels of care, standards, practice or patient safety are compromised and develop appropriate actions to address these concerns
- Have excellent clinical understanding and practice within the scope of their NMC registration
- Provide advice and support as required to all professionals, junior colleagues, patients and their families
- Promote clinical practice that reduces risk to patients
- Ensure formal and informal teaching is in place for all staff to ensure evidence‑based nursing care is delivered locally and across the wider organisation
- Assist in setting and monitoring standards of nursing care within the Colposcopy unit
- Support the manager with planning rotas and assisting in allocation of staff to meet the needs of the clinical area and the patients, considering skill mix and acuity and activity levels
- Actively support resource management
- Escalate promptly and appropriately where standards of care and safety are not being met
- Support clinicians in conducting outpatient operative procedures, initiating emergency treatment as required
- Ensure all staff including temporary staff, students and medical staff receive a full induction and training when working on the unit
- Be clinically competent and confident in using and cleaning the medical equipment
- Act as a practice assessor if required in accordance with NMC standards
- Communicate sensitive and distressing information to patients and their carers and ensure follow up support is provided
- Assist in arranging and facilitating department meetings and MDT meetings
- Contribute to identifying patient safety risks and potential improvements in the department and assist in developing actions and solutions to address these

Person Specification Qualifications- Leadership/Management training or willing to undertake such training
- Registered Nurse
- Degree in a health‑related subject
- MSc in Advanced Practice or working towards
- Non‑Medical Prescriber course
- 3 years or more as a Band 6
- Supervising and assessing in a clinical setting
- Clinical audit and research
- Relevant training and experience in Gynaecology
- Experience working in Hysteroscopy services
- Significant experience collaborating as part of the MDT
- Resource management
- Workforce planning
- Worked as clinical nurse specialist in Specialist Service
- Guideline, SOP and patient literature development
