Overview

Responsible for completing high quality railcar repairs, modifications and upgrades in a safe and timely manner according to customer and regulatory guidelines.

Customer Service

Ensure quality repairs are made on a timely basis to reduce out-of-service time for the equipment of host railroads and other customers.

Safety

Ensure every task is approached proactively with potential risks and safety always in mind and the proper PPE is utilized without exception while on the job.

Quality

Ensure quality work is completed that is compliant with both customer and regulatory requirements.

Education and Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic mathematical skills to include addition, subtraction, fractions and units of measure. Reading comprehension to include reading blueprints, technical manuals and regulatory guidelines.
Special Skills
  • Basic mechanical skills;
    Safety awareness;
    Comfort in industrial setting.
Essential Functions of Position
  • Management has the discretion to change or modify the duties and essential functions at any time in accordance with operating needs.
  • Frequency of essential functions, marginal functions, machine/equipment/tools used, physical requirements, and working conditions may change due to the type or railcar, weather, and location operating restrictions.
  • Repair, modify, upgrade and clean railcars according to blueprints and other specifications using hand tools, power tools and precision measuring instruments.
  • Rebuild railcar components: bolsters, side framers, hitch heads, and box car doors using hand tools and power tools and precision measuring instruments.
  • Assemble subassemblies, major components and equipment. Check function to test for proper operation. Measure, cut and thread pipes. Replace air lines using hand tools.
  • Move, align and set parts in place using a forklift or bobcat.
  • Repair broken parts using hand tools and welding equipment.
Marginal Functions
  • Maintain a clean work environment. This includes any shop or administrative space and company vehicles.
  • All other duties as assigned by Operations Manager.
Machine/Equipment/Tools Used
  • Impact wrenches; electric grinders; hydraulic jacks; forklifts; and mobile trucks.
  • Various styles of welders (Stick and MIG).
  • Cutting torch used for cutting frequently; heating torch used while bending regularly; side grinder used for grinding regularly; hoist used for lifting regularly; winch used for pulling regularly.
Physical Requirements
  • Physical abilities (approximate times - vary slightly by location).
  • Must be able to complete these requirements with or without accommodation.
  • Standing, hearing, seeing and talking for 8 to 10 hours;
    Handling for 3 to 6 hours;
    Walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching with hands and arms, stretching, using fingers to feel for 3 to 6 hours;
    Reaching below the waist, twisting and feeling for up to 2 hours;
    Climbing or balancing up to 3 hours;
    Sitting up to 3 hours.
  • Lifting:
    Car parts from 1-80 lbs. throughout the day - lifting 10-25 lbs. frequently; 25-50 lbs. regularly; over 50 lbs. occasionally. Wrenches weighing up to 10 lbs. to tighten bolts occasionally - 4 hours.
  • Pulling: 10-25 lbs. frequently; 25-50 lbs. regularly; over 50 lbs. occasionally.
  • Environment:
    Must be able to work in - Outdoor weather conditions; non-weather related hot or cold conditions in small spaces; areas with fumes and airborne particles; worksites with mechanical vibrations, and loud, noisy machines and tools.
  • Proper PPE and safety procedures required.
  • Safety Equipment to include:
    Steel toe shoes, hard hat, ear plugs, safety glasses, required gloves, welding shield, cutting shield, burning goggles, grinding shield, and proper clothing (long sleeve shirts and long pants while welding), and any other site-specific PPE required.

$23.50 - $23.50 an hour

1st shift - weekends off

Occasional Overtime
