Position Overview
The Department of Juvenile Justice seeks a motivated Educator to instruct students using developmental teaching methods. The ideal candidate will set student goals, implement behavioral techniques, and collaborate with school personnel.
Essential Functions- Administers classroom and individual instruction to youth in the assigned subject area.
- Develops curricula for each assigned teaching subject.
- Creates examination tools to assess each student’s strengths, weaknesses, and progress.
- Maintains detailed records and reports on attendance, achievement, and individual progress and needs.
- Directs students in recreational, social, or other extracurricular activities.
- Participates in discussions and planning at regular teachers’ meetings, counselor-teacher meetings, team meetings, and staff development.
- Performs other duties as reasonably within the scope of the enumerated duties.
- Possession of a current and valid Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Professional Educator License (PEL) with Secondary Education, Grades K-12, in Science.
- Ability to communicate with and instruct adult students of all levels of competence.
- Ability to communicate with and instruct students with physical and/or intellectual disabilities.
- Elementary knowledge of behavior modification principles.
- Elementary knowledge of and ability to operate a personal computer.
- Written and spoken knowledge of a foreign language at a colloquial skill level when necessary to instruct non‑English speaking students.
- Proficiency in manual communications when instructing students who are deaf, hard of hearing or deafblind.
- Proficiency in Braille when instructing students who are blind, visually impaired, or deafblind.
- Ability to prepare written documentation related to student performance and education.
- Ability to relate to students with extreme and profound emotional impairments.
- Patience and tolerance of a wide range of behavior.
- Use of the English language in preparing and delivering instructions.
- Ability to evaluate the student, select behavioral objectives, and guide facility staff regarding necessary training and educational development.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, and parents.
- Pass an IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Pass a drug screen. Use of unauthorized drugs by an employee is prohibited.
- Travel as required for duties, including overnight stays if appropriate. A valid driver’s license is required.
- Attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, and industry‑related topics relevant to the job duties.
