What We NeedThe Town of Harrisburg is accepting applications in the Fire Department for the position of Fire Inspector. The employee in this class performs tasks that include fire code enforcement and inspections, fire education and safety, fire investigation, and plan reviews. The employee is responsible for the fire prevention programs to ensure compliance with State and local fire laws, codes, rules, and regulations.
Work includes performing inspections of commercial and retail establishments, schools, health care facilities, new construction, renovations, and, if requested, residences. The employee plans and implements a program of fire prevention and safety education with all ages of the community. Considerable independence and judgment are required in all aspects of the work, particularly in fire inspections and investigations. The employee is subject to hazards associated with fire inspection and investigation work, including working in both inside and outside environments, extreme cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as high heat, chemicals, proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, high places, atmospheric conditions, and blood borne pathogens;
the employee may also be required to work in close quarters. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Fire Marshal and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and written reports concerning the quality and effectiveness of the work performed.
Graduation from a community college with a degree in fire science supplemented by courses in fire inspection and prevention, and considerable experience in the fire service and/or fire inspections; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties of the job. Possession of a North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification is preferred but not required.

- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
North Carolina Fire Inspector Level II with the ability to obtain Fire Inspector Level III within 18 months of hire date as a condition of continued employment with the Town of Harrisburg.

The hiring range is $54,037 – $67,217 annually and starting salary will be dependent on qualifications and prior experience. Eligible for a $2,500 sign‑on bonus upon hire.
