General Information

The Facilities Management Stormwater department seeks a summer‑only Natural Resource Technician to support the University’s Tree Campus and Bee Campus programs and manage campus natural areas. The role is field‑centric, involving maintenance of pollinator garden spaces, invasive plant mapping, data collection on plant and animal communities, and outreach support.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintain campus pollinator garden spaces: weed beds, mulch, and water regularly.
  • Plant native pollinator‑friendly plants and create informative labels.
  • Organize volunteer days for maintenance.
  • Participate in community outreach and tabling events to promote Bee Campus and Tree Campus programs.
  • Assist with environmental education during field trips and summer youth camps.
  • Map invasive plant species in natural areas and riparian buffers.
  • Collect plant and animal population data on campus.
  • Clean up trash in campus streams.
  • Assist with data collection for the EJC Arboretum’s tree inventory map.
  • Support FM staff with additional stormwater or sustainability projects as needed.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of native plant species and identification of common invasive plants.
  • Ability to work independently outdoors in varied weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Experience interacting with diverse audiences in educational programs, field trips, and outreach.
  • Proficiency with hand tools such as trowels, shovels, rakes, and wheelbarrows.
  • Capability to follow verbal instructions, navigate uneven terrain, and perform physically demanding work.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Good disciplinary and academic standing at JMU.
  • Undergraduate degree‑seeking, enrolled at least half‑time (6 credits), and not studying abroad during summer 2026.
