The City of Harrisonburg is currently seeking applications for Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Certified Police Officers interested in joining HPD as a part-time employee to assist with various assignments, such as Patrol, School Resource Officer (SRO), Emergency Custody Orders (ECO), and Temporary Detention Orders (TDO).
Candidates who are not currently Virginia DCJS Certified Police Officers will not be considered for this process and should monitor the City’s website for the next entry-level Police Officer-related posting.
The preferred hiring range for this position is $26.86 - $29.22 per hour. An exact offer may be determined based on the years of experience as a Virginia DCJS Certified Officer and other related factors.

(Subject to Administrative Memorandum)
- Assist with patrol functions, including but not limited to enforcing laws, investigating criminal activity, ensuring public safety, handling calls-for-service (CFS), emergency responses, and other first responder duties.
- Serve in the Community Resource Unit as an SRO assigned to K-12 schools in the Harrisonburg City Public Schools (if trained as an SRO).
- Assist with calls for service related to ECO and TDO, including maintaining security of detained individuals and providing transportation of consumers to appropriate mental health facilities outside of the city limits.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Currently certified as a Law Enforcement Officer through the Virginia DCJS, the Federal Government or another state.
- High School Diploma or GED. College Degree or Military Experience preferred.
- 21 years of age at time of application.
- U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien with an application for Naturalization filed and pending with Immigration Services, if DCJS-approved.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable record per City policy.
- Ability to work on a part-time basis. Schedule may vary depending upon business needs.

When the applicable documents are requested by the Harrisonburg Police Department, you will be expected to provide them.
