Hours:
Monday through Friday 6:30am to 2:30pm with required call. Candidate must live within 30 minutes of the hospital for call purposes. Weekday call is 14:30–06:00 the following morning;
Weekend call is 24 hours (Saturday and Sunday).
Sign-On Bonus: $15,000 available for qualified candidates.
Department Overview: The Surgical Tech will work in two ORs and one hybrid OR, collaborating with Cardio-thoracic Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Cardiovascular Technologists, Physician Assistants, and Registered Nurses. The Cardiothoracic Operating Room (CTOR) is part of Surgical Services. Sentara RMH supports multiple ORs and specialized suites, including a Robotic OR and Hybrid OR.
Role Summary: The Cardiovascular Surgical Technologist assists cardiovascular surgeons during open-heart, vascular, and thoracic procedures. Responsibilities include preparing the OR, organizing instruments and supplies, maintaining a sterile environment, anticipating the surgeon’s needs, and providing intraoperative support to optimize outcomes and safety. This is the primary scrub technician role during cardiovascular and thoracic surgeries.
Responsibilities: Pass instruments, sutures, grafts, and other sterile supplies; ensure instruments are sterilized and functional; maintain sterile technique; collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and nursing staff; assist with specimen handling, documentation, and surgical counts; participate in preoperative briefings and postoperative debriefings; support room turnover and departmental organization; and uphold safety and infection control standards.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Trade School Graduate preferred
Certification/Licensure
- NBSTSA certification required;
Surgical Technologist Licensure required if applicable in the state of practice (otherwise NBSTSA certification suffices) - Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
- BLS
Experience
- 1 year of experience in cardio or thoracic surgery required
- Knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, instrumentation, and procedures
- Ability to work independently on CVOR cases including TAVR and vascular cases
- Strong communication, teamwork, and ability to perform under pressure
- Ability to take call independently with advanced cardiac surgery skills
- Attention to detail and physical stamina for long, high-risk cases
- Maintains sterile field and safety protocols; participates in preoperative/postoperative activities and room turnover
