Physical requirements: This is agile work requiring the exertion of up to and exceeding 50 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
Certifications: Current Virginia/NREMT-Paramedic Certification, NFPA 1021 Officer Level II (associate degree compatible), Fire Instructor Level II, Hazardous Material Technician (Within 24 months), Emergency Vehicle Operation Course, Valid Virginia Driver’s License, ICS 300, ICS 400 (Within 1 year), VAOEM Education Coordinator (Within 18 months), VDFP Firefighter 1 and 2 TTT ASAP, Hazmat Operations TTT (Within 1 year), BLS CPR Instructor (Within 1 year)
Job SummaryUnder direction, performs a variety of administrative, supervisory, and technical duties involved in planning, coordinating, assigning, directing, and participating in training, fire suppression, emergency medical service, hazardous materials response, rescue, and related services and activities; and ensures that all assigned activities are carried out effectively, efficiently, safely, and according to department guidelines and policies. Work includes supervising, instructing, and directing the training of both Volunteers and Paid Staff.
The role of this position will be to focus on providing and directing basic and advanced training in all disciplines of our department.
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential duties:
- Remains current on the principles, practices, and new developments in the field of fire suppression, technical rescue, emergency medical and hazardous materials; incorporates new developments as appropriate; creates and/or updates department training materials according to best practices
- Makes recommendations for the annual training budget to include such materials as equipment, supplies, improvements, and related needs
- Attends and participates in multiple agencies, professional groups, and committee meetings;
Develop and deliver presentations to leadership, employee groups and others on matters related to the operations and training of the Department. Performs training and evaluation of suppression/EMS personnel and performs research and implements programs to ensure the Training Division operates in an efficient, effective, and safe manner - Plans, organizes, and directs the department training activities for department personnel;
Communicates with others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations. Works closely with the Division Chief to establish policies and procedures for the assigned areas of responsibility;
Provides technical assistance and review for departmental policies;
Coordinates training and safety needs of the department accordingly - Assists with orientation and training of new employees, meeting OSHA, HIPAA, and any other related standards
- Responsible for yearly employee evaluation, performance notes and performance goals for assigned employees
- Encourages and fosters an excellent working relationship with volunteer fire and rescue agencies and their Training Officers
- Sets exemplary standards of professionalism and respect for all personnel, departmentally, or otherwise with whom they may have contact
- Ensure instructor cadre is prepared and provide instructional and logistical support for classes
- Responsible for all course paperwork and ensures the completion and submittal to the appropriate agency within required time frames
- Provides additional educational opportunities/training to enhance skills and abilities of staff for promotional consideration
- Monitors renewal of all certifications for employees of the department
- Provides a yearly data and monthly staff report to the Division Chief of Training
- Coordinates the planning, development, and schedule of quarterly training, annual live burns, annual Pump test, annual OSHA training, annual HIPAA Training, and annual seminars such as Regional School
- Be an advocate of our department while serving as a liaison between Virginia Department of Emergency Management, Virginia Office of EMS, and Virginia Department of Fire Programs
- Be able to fulfill command staff role or any position that is needed at emergency scenes
- Potentially Serves as Duty Officer as needed and directed by the Fire Chief
- Be proficient with a good understanding of software programs such as MS Word, EXCEL, PPT and other programs that the department utilizes
