Graduate Assistant – Field Hockey
OverviewEastern Mennonite University (EMU) in Harrisonburg, VA, invites applications for a Graduate Assistant in Athletics to support the Field Hockey program. The position is part of EMU’s inclusive campus community and is available to eligible graduate students who are admitted to an EMU graduate program.
Job SummaryThe graduate assistant serves as an assistant to a sport head coach or department director while completing the requirements for a graduate degree. This hourly, variable‑hour position (under 29 hours/week) supports the philosophy and goals of the head coach/director and the mission and vision of EMU. It includes a range of responsibilities that vary throughout the year as needed by the program.
Duties/ Responsibilities
- Follow the work schedule set by the head coach/director.
- Maintain professional relationships with players.
- Communicate regularly with the head coach/director.
- Support decisions made by the head coach/director.
- Positively represent the program and the university.
- Attend meetings called by the head coach and Graduate Assistant Supervisor.
- Thorough understanding of the fundamentals of the applicable team sport.
- Thorough understanding of rules and regulations for student athletes and coaches in the sport.
- Thorough understanding of NCAA Division III rules and regulations.
- Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and managerial skills.
- Ability to communicate appropriately with athletes, coaching staff, administrators, and campus colleagues.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Google Drive and related platforms.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Admission to an EMU graduate program required at the effective date of the position.
- Regularly required to talk or hear; frequently sit and use hands; occasionally stand, walk, climb or balance during practices, games, meets, matches, and other competitions.
- Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
- Clear vision (close, peripheral, and ability to shift focus); ability to watch and analyze video of opposing teams.
- Occasional off‑campus travel, including overnight stays.
Work with Work Study students (when applicable).
