Ward Clerk - MDU

The Medical Day Units (MDU) services have grown significantly over the past 12 months with additional staff, extension to opening hours and new pathways.

We are a nurse-led unit, providing treatment for day patients from Gastro, Endocrine, Haematology, oncology Urology, Rheumatology, and Dermatology departments.

The Ward Clerk role is to act as a receptionist and first line contact for patients to the department as well as ensuring all follow up appointments are booked using the trusts bookwise system

Main duties of the job

The role of the Ward Clerk is extremely varied. Some of the key tasks include:

  • Maintain effective communication to both patients, relatives and staff in order to ensure the smooth running of the ward; enhancing patient care. Being the first point of contact for patients, relatives and staff both face to face and on the telephone.
  • Provide excellent customer care which may include communication with distressed and anxious patients and relatives, treating them with tact and empathy. Deal with all such communications appropriately, including sensitive issues.
  • Create, input and update MDU admissions/arrivals ensuring data is inputted and notes are scanned onto electronic systems.
  • Provide a proactive and professional welcome to the ward reception, acting as the public face for the Trust
  • Deliver an efficient administrative and clerical service to the Ward Team
  • Ensure all information is secure and confidentiality of information is maintained at all times
  • Ensure the professional image of the Trust is maintained at all times
