Health Care Support Worker

The Healthcare Support Worker is a core member of the team delivering direct care to patients in interventional radiology and supporting registered practitioners to deliver high quality, compassionate health care to people in accordance with assessed needs and a care plan.

Main duties of the job

Provide and deliver a high standard of compassionate care recognising and meeting with specific needs of the patients within set protocols and within the scope of the Health care assistant role. Acknowledge any limitations of competence in accepting care activities outside agreed limitations and inform a registered practitioner. Seek supervision to ensure that personal clinical practice is continuing to develop. Participate in appropriate training to ensure safe, competent clinical practice.

Ensure that all documentation is countersigned by a qualified member of the team in accordance with the NMC and Trust guidance. Act at all times in the best interest of the patient. Carry out clinical observations on patients, recognising, recording and reporting any adverse signs to registered practitioner. Undertake and perform clinical skills within specific competency boundaries e.g. venepuncture, cannulation.

Assist in the safe moving and handling of all patients utilising appropriate equipment. Utilise early warning score indicators (e.g. NEWS2) to recognise any patient deterioration/sudden change in condition, reporting immediately to the registered practitioner. Prepare patient for and assist with specific clinical procedures appropriate to clinical area within agreed competency boundaries. Assist in safe and appropriate use and maintenance of equipment.

Job responsibilities

You will carry out a range of clinical and non-clinical healthcare, or therapeutic tasks, under the direct or indirect supervision of the registered healthcare practitioner, in accordance with the Trust values.

There will be opportunities to develop your knowledge and skills, specific to your needs. Training will be provided to ensure you have the required core skills and skills set specific to your area of work. You will also be supported to obtain your care certificate if you do not have this qualification.

Starting grade and condition of appointment

As a condition of appointment, you will remain on NHS Agenda for Change (AFC) Band 2 until successful completion of the Care Certification. The Care Certification includes a series of mandatory training modules covering essential skills and knowledge required for providing high-quality care. These modules typically encompass areas such as patient safety, infection control, communication skills, and basic clinical procedures. It is expected that the Care Certification will be completed during the probationary period of 6 months from your contracted start date.

Failure to complete the Care Certification within this timeframe may result in termination of employment. If you already possess a Care Certification, it will be reviewed during the recruitment process to determine its validity and relevance. Upon successful completion (or accepted evidence) of the Care Certification, you will be promoted to NHS AFC Band 3.

Duties and responsibilities
  • Obtain consent prior to giving care in accordance with Trust policies.
  • Duties are delegated to you in line with care plans by interventional radiology team.
  • Not all duties are routine and you will need to use your knowledge, experience and understanding to take decisions within your area of responsibility.
  • To carry out a limited range of clinical duties with minimal / no supervision, including for example; blood pressure monitoring, oxygen saturation levels, body temperature, pulse rate and respiration rate, glucose monitoring, collection and testing of urine samples / faecal samples / sputum samples and wound swabs ensuring delivery of high-quality patient care at all times.
