Principal DBA – Managed & Expert Services - Vertice Cloud

Location:

Harrogate/Hybrid Permanent, Full Time

To provide a comprehensive range of Oracle Database and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) technical services to Vertice’s Managed Services customers. The successful candidate will work across on‑premise environments, Oracle Engineered Systems, and OCI, delivering both proactive operational support and project‑based consultancy.

Responsibilities include Oracle Database installation, upgrades, patching, performance monitoring and optimisation, alongside the implementation of backup and disaster recovery solutions such as RMAN and Data Guard. The role supports Oracle Database versions 10g–26ai, including RAC, OEM, Golden Gate and Web Logic Server, and extends to infrastructure and Cloud Services within OCI.

Working within a Managed Services environment, the role requires a strong customer focus, adherence to SLAs, and the ability to handle complex troubleshooting and solution implementation. Frequent customer interaction is a core part of the role, therefore excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. Flexibility is required to meet customer business needs, including participation in out‑of‑hours support when required.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • Work closely with customer systems, remotely performing routine maintenance and support tasks.
  • Install, configure and administer Oracle Databases, including the latest 26ai features and options.
  • Perform database and operating system patching and upgrades.
  • Implement and manage backup and disaster recovery solutions using RMAN and Data Guard.
  • Support and administer RAC, Multitenant, OEM, Golden Gate and Web Logic Server.
  • Carry out data migrations and replication projects, including Oracle Golden Gate.
  • Conduct Database health checks and performance tuning.
  • Monitor and manage database environments using Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM).
  • Ensure adherence to security best practices, including access control and privilege management.
  • Follow Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA) best practices.
  • Liaise with Oracle Support through My Oracle Support to resolve or escalate issues.
  • Support, implement and manage Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) solutions.
  • Deploy and manage IaaS and DBaaS across Bare Metal, Virtualised and PDB architectures.
  • Support Oracle Engineered Systems, including Exadata (on‑premise and cloud), Oracle Database Appliance (ODA), and Recovery Appliance.
  • Manage Oracle Linux, Oracle KVM, and Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager (OLVM).
  • Perform operating system and hypervisor installation, patching and upgrades across Linux and Windows environments.
  • Provide cloud and infrastructure performance monitoring, tuning and capacity planning.
  • Manage cloud networking, including VLANs, routing, VPNs, load balancers, ingress/egress rules and security lists.
  • Implement and maintain OCI security standards, including CIS benchmarks and Cloud Guard recipes.
  • Configure and manage cloud‑based alerting, billing and security reporting.
Key Skills and Competencies
  • Certifications: Certified to OCP/OCA standard for Oracle Database.
  • Oracle Cloud Certifications.
  • Expert level experience: Working with Oracle Database software, architectures and complimentary technology (RAC, Data Guard, Multitenant, OEM, etc.).
  • Good level experience: Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Oracle infrastructure such as ODA, Exadata, ZFS.
  • Good level experience: Generic infrastructure and storage solutions such as HPE, Dell, IBM, Cisco.
  • Excellent knowledge of Oracle Database installations.
  • Backup/Recovery, Performance Tuning, UNIX/Linux Operating Systems and network infrastructure.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
  • Excellent report writing skills (such as solution designs and performance assessments).
