Contract: Permanent – Full Time.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm with on call responsibilities.

Salary: Up to £17.30 per hour dependent on experience.

Southlands offers residential and nursing care including support for those living with Parkinson’s. The home also offers short stays for recovery and respite, tailored to suit the individual, as well as a day care service available to the local community which includes meals and activities for the day. Southlands dates from 1870 and was formally one of Harrogate’s premier hotels. It still has much of its charm and combines homely qualities with modern care technology.

Occupants enjoy their own ballroom and traditional bar, as well as ensuite rooms. You’ll find Southlands in the popular spa town of Harrogate, surrounded by landscaped gardens and close to local shops, with the train station only a short 10‑minute walk away. Yorkshire traditions are embraced in the food menu, which includes homemade cakes and speciality teas and coffees. The chef takes a personal approach to diet, and meals are catered to individual tastes.

Cold snacks and alternatives are available throughout the day. There is a real sense of community. Staff discover what residents enjoy doing and organise the social calendar around those interests, including musicians, choirs, arts and crafts, sherry mornings, croquet and themed events such as ‘messy play’ with a local nursery, coffee mornings or lunch clubs.

• Ensuring that all health and safety and compliance checks are carried out using the provided digital systems as per Bupa Standard Operating Procedures and compliance tools.
• Action and close any tasks attributed to the Maintenance Manager or home highlighted on Bupa compliance management tools.
• Ensure that safety and cleanliness within the care home and grounds meets Environmental Health, local Fire Authority, Legionella Risk Assessment, Health & Safety regulations and other requirements.
• Ensure that all necessary maintenance and repair tasks are completed to a high standard, in a timely manner and offer value for money while maintaining internal decoration consistency with the organisation’s vision.
• Ensure regular review of residents’ preferences in relation to their personal space is documented and actioned.
• Report defects, obtain quotes and manage repairs using Bupa approved contractors, complying with Bupa’s Standard Operating Procedures.
• Report irreparable defects to Home Manager or Property/Maintenance Manager as appropriate.
• Manage Care Home elements of any refurbishment or capex programme, ensuring minimal disruption to residents, visitors and staff.
• Ensure that all tools and equipment are maintained and safely secured at all times.
• Assist with induction of new colleagues regarding emergency exits, fire points and evacuation procedures, keeping a record as required by the Home Manager, especially where equipment use is involved.
• Provide maintenance support to a local Care Home within a reasonable distance (no more than 1 hour) when required to support regional maintenance needs.

• A good understanding of building services (heating, hot and cold‑water distribution, ventilation, electrical distribution, plumbing).
• Sound understanding of building fabric and its maintenance.
• Practical experience of planned maintenance systems and record keeping.
• Knowledge of relevant statutory requirements and experience of compliance.
• A full driving licence.
• A building/electrical/plumbing qualification (City & Guilds, BTEC, ONC, HNC etc.) or a minimum of three years hands‑on experience in property maintenance and general repairs where possible.
• Ability to work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
• Computer literate.
• Good customer service skills.
• Be flexible to meet changing demands within the care home.
• Practical ability and experience in painting and decorating.
