Consultant in Microbiology

Full time (10 PAs) – £109,725 – £145,478 per annum plus London weighting and 8% allowance for 1 in 4 on‑call duties

Applications are invited for a Consultant in Medical Microbiology to work in the Trust. The Trust has 9,000 staff, including 1,300 doctors and 4,000 nurses, serving a population of approximately 850,000.

London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust is one of the largest integrated care Trusts, bringing together hospital and community services across the boroughs of Brent, Harrow and Ealing.

  • Northwick Park Hospital – one of the busiest emergency departments in the country.
  • St Mark's Hospital – internationally renowned specialist centre for bowel disease.
  • Ealing Hospital – district general hospital with 24/7 emergency department.
  • Central Middlesex Hospital – planned care site hosting a range of surgical and outpatient services.
Main duties
  • Provide clinical microbiology service across Northwick Park, St Mark’s, Ealing and Central Middlesex hospitals and local communities.
  • Participate in the out‑of‑hours on‑call rota (1:4).
  • Work closely with clinician staff, the Infection Control Team, and senior microbiology colleagues.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of microbiology results, maintaining professional standards.
  • Contribute to clinical audit, teaching, training and research activities.
  • Represent microbiology at the Infection Control Committee, Antibiotic Committee and other departmental meetings.
  • Support antimicrobial stewardship programmes.
  • Maintain liaison with all clinical departments, attending ward rounds, audit meetings and other required activities.
Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • GMC registration – Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT/CSER) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • MRCP, MSc Medical Microbiology, MD, PhD or equivalent.
Skills and experience
  • Previous experience in a clinical microbiology department in the NHS.
  • Broad training in clinical microbiology, virology and its subspecialties.
  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff.
  • IT skills and computer literacy.
