Job Overview

Harrow Paediatric Occupational Therapy are looking for motivated, flexible and innovative therapists to work with children and young people in Harrow. We are a friendly, dynamic and innovative team who are passionate about supporting children, young people and families in Harrow. We have an established internal training programme along side regular opportunities for external training.

We are based at Alexandra Avenue where there is a high level of integration and collaboration between different health, education and social care services.

Main duties of the job

This post will involve working in both clinics / pre-school and mainstream schools with children aged 0‑11 years old with special educational needs. You will have a dedicated caseload enabling you to consolidate your occupational therapy skills through assessment and intervention sessions. Our service is keen to focus on evidence based family‑centred care principles, and applying best practice guidelines to enable occupational participation.

We are open to new ideas and constantly reviewing and modifying the way we work.

The post holder will contribute to departmental meetings, clinical audit/research and projects. They will provide advice and deliver training to other professionals and parents/carers on all aspects of paediatric occupational therapy. He/she will provide clinical education and training to physiotherapy students and will supervise the work of the PTA’s and LSA’s.

Job Description And Main Responsibilities
  • To manage a caseload of CYP with SEN
  • This includes:
  • Gaining appropriate consent
  • Planning, delivering and evaluating treatment programmes
  • Using specialist manual handling techniques
  • Referring on to other services/professionals as appropriate in particular, Harrow Wheelchair services, Community equipment store, Consultant Paediatricians,
  • Using specialist knowledge and demonstrating advanced skills in dealing with complex issues, including those where there are conflicting clinical indicators, to generate appropriate strategies for caseload management and wider issues relating to service provision for children with Occupational Therapy needs.
  • Negotiating with CYP parents/carers, and others around individual case management
  • Writing reports reflecting highly specialist knowledge and providing specific advice for statutory assessment of special educational needs
  • Analyse clinical and social information from a range of sources and integrate into assessment and development of care/treatment plan
  • To provide highly specialist advice and programmes to OTs, other professionals and parents regarding the management of children with OT needs.
  • To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence based practice and manage clinical risk within this area of service
Person specification Education And Qualifications Essential criteria
  • Recognised Occupational Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
  • Health Professions Council – Licence to Practice
Desirable criteria
  • Member of College of Occupational Therapy
  • Member of CYPF RCOT specialist section
  • Evidence of CPD in portfolio including attendance of specialist short courses relevant to CYP
Experience Essential criteria
  • Working as part of an MDT
  • Managing own caseload
  • Working with parents / carers
  • Writing clinical notes and reports
  • Use and application of specialist Occupational Therapy assessments an outcome measures.
  • Teaching other professionals/parents
