Job Overview

The post holder will work as a team member assuming responsibility for the assessment of nursing needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of effective programmes of care, maintaining and promoting standards. They will provide supervision to new and junior colleagues, support the multidisciplinary teams and management teams. The post involves coordinating the unit in the absence of the person with continuing responsibility, directly assisting on the provision of a high quality clinical and organisational service.

The role also involves planning the admission, discharge and appropriate referral of patients to the unit. The post holder is expected to comply with Policies and Procedures, support the senior team in improving services, and be a positive champion for any change proposed. They will evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care, participate in audits to check and counter‑check the effectiveness of existing pathways, policies and procedures in the department to ensure patient safety, participate in the Clinical Governance of the department and Trust, contribute to the Trust-wide nursing agenda, report all accidents, incidents and complaints and assist in the investigation of the same, contribute to department meetings and act as a positive role model to support recruitment and retention of staff.

In addition, the post holder will participate in the recruitment of staff, work within local protocols and national guidelines, and support the multidisciplinary and management teams with high-quality care delivery.

The ambulatory Emergency Care Unit or Medical SDEC has been open since 2012 and currently sees 50‑60 patients per day. Our service aims to provide same‑day emergency care for patients attending with undifferentiated medical conditions, thereby reducing hospital admissions and the pressure on the Emergency Department.
