Accounting Manager

Reporting & HoursReports to:
VP of Finance
Hours:
Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm (35 hrs/week)
- Oversee all accounting functions: payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger journal entries, and monthly and annual close processes.
- Develop and implement accounting policies and procedures to meet current and future needs.
- Ensure financial reporting tools and processes are in place and functioning continuously.
- Ensure all required entries are posted for the monthly and annual close.
- Review the preparation of monthly cost allocations, depreciation, accrued payroll, accrued vacation, indirect entries, and reallocation entries from completed Request for Personal Action forms.
- Approve and post all monthly journal entries prepared by the Staff Accountant and Accounts Receivable Specialist.
- Manage the timekeeping process and systems, evaluating procedures and implementing process improvements and system modifications; review logs for compliance; develop training plans; assist timekeepers with inquiries.
- Monitor timekeeping mechanisms for cost, efficiency, and new method adoption.
- Direct payroll processing: ensure timeliness, accuracy, checks and balances, issue resolution, and communication. Provide payroll production in the absence of a Payroll Coordinator.
- Act as the primary contact for vendors regarding wage garnishments; process and respond to garnishment requests promptly.
- Create, maintain, and support reports or queries using appropriate tools; assist in developing standard reports for ongoing customer needs; maintain data integrity by running queries and analyzing data.
- Prepare payroll journal entries after payroll data transmission; ensure reconciliation with third‑party provider data.
- Stay current with all applicable federal and state payroll regulations and compliance matters.
- Ensure accurate financial reporting and maintain records in compliance with GAAP.
- Provide CFO with critical financial information for decision making.
- Hire, train, retain competent accounting staff; provide coaching, guidance, support, and professional development.
- Lead continuous improvement of accounting and financial systems and processes to achieve best practices and optimal output.
- Ensure accounting staff delivers the highest standard of departmental and cross‑departmental teamwork and customer service.

Skills & Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Business Administration required. If no degree, a minimum of 15 years’ experience in an Accounting/Payroll Manager position is required.
Experience:
Minimum 5 years in a related role, including 2 years in a supervisory capacity.
Familiarity with accounting software preferred. Advanced MS Excel and MS Word skills required. Proficiency in Windows and financial software.
Demonstrated skills include excellent written and oral communication, customer service, organizational skills, multitasking, proactive judgment, and effective staff supervision.
Knowledge of federal and state funding laws, GAAP, mathematical concepts and calculations essential.

Job Type & LocationContract to Hire – Full‑time position in Hartford, CT.
Pay and BenefitsPay range: $29.67 – $35.22 per hour.
