Introduction
The State of Connecticut is hiring an Environmental Trainee in the Bureau of Materials Management and Compliance Assurance (MMCA), Sustainable Materials Management Policy and Planning (SMMPP) Division. This role offers professional growth and development opportunities and is a hybrid position allowing some teleworking.
Position Highlights- Hybrid (teleworking allowed), full-time, first shift schedule, Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, 35 hours per week.
- Based out of DEEP Headquarters in Hartford, Connecticut.
- One to three‑year training classification; upon successful completion, promoted to Environmental Analyst 1.
The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) conserves and protects Connecticut’s natural resources and environment. The MMCA mission is to manage, handle, recycle, and dispose of materials to protect environmental quality and public safety.
Responsibilities- Assist with implementing the State’s Commercial Organics Recycling Law.
- Manage and coordinate GIS data‑based work.
- Conduct statistical analyses and other related duties.
During the first year of training, Environmental Trainees earn $47,229 (Bachelor’s degree) or $48,933 (Master’s degree) per year.
Minimum Qualifications – General ExperienceCandidates must meet the experience and training requirements of the designated job class upon completion of the development program.
Preferred Qualifications- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a scientific or technical discipline related to environmental or natural sciences, environmental planning, environmental law, geographic information systems, or related field.
- Experience or education with sustainable materials management (SMM) principles, laws, or regulations.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Analytical, research, and organizational skills.
- Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and GIS software.
- Basic theories, principles, and practices of environmental and policy analysis.
- Basic statistics and environmental program planning principles.
- Interpersonal and communication skills.
- Analytical, research, and organizational abilities.
- Ability to interpret legislation and technical data; utilize computer software.
May be exposed to physical injury or hazards and moderate discomfort from weather conditions.
