Job Description
The Pharmacy Technician Sterile Compounding is responsible for assisting Pharmacists in the preparation, dispensing, and distribution of compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) and non‑sterile drug products. Under the direct supervision of a registered Pharmacist and following established standard operating procedures (SOPs) and USP guidelines, prepares sterile preparations and non‑sterile drug products to ensure medications are ready and available for patient administration.
Responsibilities- Sterile Compounding:
Under the direct supervision of a registered Pharmacist and following established standard operating procedures (SOPs) and USP guidelines, prepares sterile drug products. - Prepares all types of pharmaceuticals: non‑hazardous, controlled and non‑controlled, with regards to sterile preparations.
- Maintain accurate records of products prepared according to established documentation guidelines.
- Follows established procedures for appropriate documentation in electronic health record or similar.
- Maintain clean and safe environment for drug manipulation.
- Assist Pharmacist in filling patient‑specific medication orders and prescriptions by pulling items and ensuring medication is ready for delivery.
- Accurately document work performed throughout the compounding and/ or medication delivery process in various electronic and automated systems including but not limited to: EPIC, Dose Edge, Omnicell.
- Distribute compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) and non‑sterile drug products as specified by the Pharmacist to designated areas on the patient floors.
- Maintain and store inventory of pharmaceuticals and supplies within the pharmacy or other assigned areas under proper storage conditions and/or security.
- Receive and scan incoming medication orders from wholesalers and supply chain; appropriately handle paperwork for each order.
- Rotate stock within storage areas to promote the use of first‑expiring medications and prevent drug shortages and mitigate potential patient harm.
- Discard expired drugs in accordance with established department procedures.
- Accurately document pertinent information regarding medications throughout day‑to‑day operations, including but not limited to physical count, expiration dating, and beyond‑use dating if applicable.
- Keep accurate inventory and communicate with pharmacy purchasing team.
- Assist with routine quality assurance activities in clean room including but not limited to temperature and pressure monitoring.
- Maintain the work area and equipment in the clean room, including restocking of medications, diluents, and supplies.
- Clean ISO‑classified and/or non‑classified spaces according to department procedure and USP standards.
- Assist pharmacy manager(s) in organization of controlled substance records, including investigations regarding controlled substances when required.
- Accurately handle and execute required documentation of controlled substances according to federal and state regulations, and Connecticut Children’s standard operating procedures.
- Maintain other pertinent operational records not listed as required by department, state, or federal policies and/or guidelines.
- When working in the main pharmacy, assist customers by answering incoming calls and greeting customers at the pharmacy window.
- Retrieve orders for pickup.
- Non‑Sterile Compounding:
Under the direct supervision of a registered Pharmacist and following established standard operating procedures (SOPs) and USP guidelines, prepares non‑sterile drug products. - Prepares all types of pharmaceuticals: hazardous and non‑hazardous, controlled and non‑controlled, with regards to non‑sterile preparations only.
- Maintain accurate records of products prepared according to established documentation guidelines.
- Follows established procedures for appropriate documentation in electronic health record or similar.
- Maintain clean and safe environment for drug manipulation.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience Required
- High School Diploma, GED, or a higher level of education that would require the completion of high school.
