Travelers is inviting qualified professionals to join our Enterprise Tech Solutions organization as a Senior Database Engineer. We are looking for someone who can architect and maintain sophisticated database environments across our traditional on‑premises systems and modern cloud services.

The annual base salary for this role is $ – $, which is a nationwide market range. Actual compensation depends on factors such as scope, complexity, location, skill set, experience, and other conditions of employment. Employees are also eligible for performance‑based cash incentive awards as part of our comprehensive program.

As a Sr. Database Engineer, you will be a critical foundation for enterprise data management, architecting high‑availability systems, implementing disaster recovery solutions, and optimizing performance across hybrid environments. You will also help modernize legacy mainframe systems, develop AI‑assisted database monitoring, and enable secure, scalable data platforms.

• Lead the technical transformation of our mainframe database architecture, combining deep IMS/DB2 expertise with emerging cloud and AI technologies.
• Maintain and optimize IMS/DB2 environments, focusing on performance, reliability, and scalability.
• Serve as a subject‑matter expert for mainframe database architecture and operations.
• Lead troubleshooting of complex database issues and performance optimization.
• Design migration strategies for mainframe databases to cloud platforms and evaluate hybrid cloud‑mainframe architectures.
• Support development of AI‑assisted database monitoring and error interpretation systems, and contribute to knowledge transfer using AI‑powered documentation and chatbot interfaces.

• 7–9 years of database/data‑management experience, including 5+ years of IMS/DB2 administration and performance tuning.
• Strong understanding of mainframe architecture and z/OS environments.
• Experience with database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures.
• Knowledge of SQL optimization and database design principles.
• Excellent communication skills and business‑friendly documentation ability.

• Cloud database experience (AWS RDS, Azure SQL, or similar).
• Exposure to AI/ML concepts or tools (Python, data analytics, automation frameworks).
• Experience with database migration tools and methodologies.
• Knowledge of modern data architecture patterns and best practices.
• Familiarity with Dev Ops practices and CI/CD pipelines.

• Strong communicator who translates complex database concepts into business‑friendly language.
• Demonstrates advanced leadership by taking decisive action in ambiguous situations, inspiring and motivating team members, and influencing outcomes.

• Determines database architecture strategy, employs automated testing and monitoring, and ensures production readiness.
• Uses data and proofs­of‑concepts to solve complex problems and measure impact.

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or equivalent work experience plus 6 years of database engineering experience.
