OR Nurses – It Matters

Operating Room (OR) Registered Nurse (RN)

The OR RN is a highly skilled and detail-oriented nursing professional responsible for providing perioperative care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. This role requires expertise in sterile technique, surgical instrumentation, and patient safety throughout the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases. The RN collaborates with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and the surgical team to ensure optimal outcomes and a safe environment.

• Apply the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for surgical patients
• Conduct preoperative assessments, including patient history, allergies, and readiness for surgery
• Prepare the operating room by ensuring proper sterilization and availability of instruments and supplies
• Assist with positioning, prepping, and draping patients for surgery
• Maintain strict adherence to aseptic and sterile techniques during procedures
• Monitor patient status intraoperatively, including vital signs and anesthesia response
• Handle surgical instruments and assist surgeons during procedures
• Administer medications and IV therapies as prescribed
• Document all perioperative care accurately in the electronic health record (EHR)
• Collaborate with the surgical team to anticipate needs and respond to emergencies
• Provide postoperative care, including pain management, wound assessment, and patient education
• Ensure compliance with infection control, safety, and quality standards

• Current Registered Nurse License in the state of practice
• Minimum one year of professional nursing experience; OR or perioperative experience preferred
• Completion of Amergis' Competency Program (if applicable)
• Current BLS certification (ACLS strongly preferred)
• Knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, and sterile technique
• TB screening and health clearance (as required by contract or regulation)
• Compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations
• Successful completion of new hire orientation and OR-specific training
• Understanding of patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations
• Strong communication skills and proficiency in English
• Basic computer literacy
• Must be at least 18 years of age
