Introduction
Capitol Region Mental Health Center (CRMHC), under the umbrella of the State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), is seeking to hire a Supervising Nurse. Connecticut has joined the Nurse Licensure Compact effective October 1, 2025. The position may qualify for an additional recruitment and retention bonus of $3,000.00 for permanent second or third‑shift registered nurses who have completed one year of service in the RN classification (prorated for part‑time).
Schedule& Compensation
- Full‑time (40 hours per week) Second shift (4:00 PM - 12:30 AM)
- Every other weekend and holidays, as scheduled
- Working days:
Week 1 – Friday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday;
Week 2 – Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday - Location:
Capitol Region Mental Health Center, Inpatient Unit (ITU), 500 Vine Street, Hartford, CT - Compensation:
Base annual salary plus optional bonus as described above

Provide leadership and guidance in developing and maintaining nursing standards, enhancing delivery of essential services; provide administrative and clinical oversight, including supervision of professional nurses, paraprofessionals, and all other staff; conduct annual performance evaluations; identify educational gaps and develop annual staff competencies; act as liaison with other units, agencies, and outside organizations; oversee nursing operations in the absence of the Director of Nursing;
respond to psychiatric or medical emergencies; and perform related duties as required.
- Plan, organize, and direct health services for assigned program, unit(s), facility, or geographic area.
- Ensure goals, objectives, and work performed align with standards and deliver quality care.
- Provide clinical guidance to nursing staff.
- Select, develop, motivate, and evaluate staff.
- Monitor quality of documentation, records, and other information concerning services and care.
- Ensure availability of resources to provide quality services.
- Participate in the development of policies and procedures for efficient and effective service delivery.
- Participate in long‑range planning for health care programs.
- Act as liaison with other units, agencies, and outside organizations.
- Prepare, analyze, and evaluate reports and other information concerning service delivery.
- Respond to psychiatric or medical emergencies and, if necessary, physically restrain individuals.
- Oversee all nursing operations in the absence of the Director of Nursing.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Extensive knowledge of nursing principles, clinical therapeutic models, and nursing standards.
- Expertise in specialized individual care, current medications, and culturally sensitive practice.
- Strong understanding of accreditation procedures and protocols.
- Knowledge of management, administrative principles, and human resource development strategies.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with professionals, community resources, and providers.
- Leadership and supervisory ability in nursing settings.
- Professional judgment to identify areas for improvement and lead quality initiatives.
- Four (4) years of experience as a Registered Nurse in a hospital, regional, institutional, or psychiatric setting.
- A Bachelor’s degree in nursing may substitute one (1) year of general experience.
- A Master’s degree in nursing may substitute one (1) additional year of general experience.
- Experience working on a behavioral health unit.
- Experience supervising unit subordinates on a behavioral health unit.
- Must possess and retain a current license or temporary permit as a Registered Nurse in Connecticut or hold a Multistate or Compact Registered Nurse license.
- May be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in American Sign Language in certain positions.
- May be required to travel.
- May be required to lift and restrain individuals.
- May have exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals.
- May be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
