Hours:

On site position. Typical hours are Monday - Friday but alternate days/times may be required as needed.

The Nursing Unit Supervisor will have 24/7 accountability for an assigned nursing area/unit. The Supervisor plans, organizes, and directs nursing practice for areas of responsibility in accordance with the Mercyhealth Mission, Vision, Values and Philosophy. The Supervisor maintains clinical expertise and provides direct patient care in proportion to the needs of their areas. The Supervisor ensures an exceptional total patient experience in quality of care and patient perception, meeting system dashboard goals.

The Supervisor interviews, selects, orients, trains, coaches, mentors, and evaluates partners, providing corrective action when necessary. Performs other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Strong problem‑solving abilities in complex situations.
  • Work within budget and productivity targets to meet organizational objectives, supporting staff selection, evaluation, orientation, continued education, competency evaluation, and appropriate scheduling based on patient acuity.
  • Partner with the Manager/Clinical Leader to align staff knowledge, skills, and behaviors with unit goals.
  • Build outstanding relationships and strong physician relationships.
  • Commit to delivering the highest levels of quality, safety, and customer service; account for patient satisfaction targets and action plans.
  • Support process improvement in operations, quality, and organizational change for the unit.
  • Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards for the area of responsibility.
  • Communicate effectively and persuasively, consistently demonstrating compassion, creativity, and visibility.
  • Participate in hospital and department committees.
  • Develop and mentor staff and colleagues.
  • Lead by example, demonstrating professional behavior and holding others to the same standards.
  • Exhibit a passion for nursing and serve as a role model for Critical Moments of Service Standards and service recovery.
  • Participate in department or unit performance improvement activities, including shared governance.
  • Use critical thinking regarding patient safety and experience, escalating appropriately.
  • Support the professional nurse continuum and nursing clinical ladder for RNs (CARE).
Education and Experience

Graduate of an accredited nursing program. BSN preferred.

Certification and Licensure

Licensed as an RN in the state of practice. CPR certification required within 90 days. Other unit requirements may include ACLS, PALS, PEARS, NRP.

Skills and Abilities

May include color blind test.

Special Physical Demands

Regularly required to talk or hear, stand, walk, use hands and arms, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch. Must lift or move up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception.

Level of Supervision

Performs job duties with general supervision; regularly supervises and manages others.
