Position: 2026-27 An Wang Postdoctoral Fellowship in Chinese Studies

Program Overview

The Fairbank Center at Harvard University invites applications for the An Wang Postdoctoral Fellowship (2026‑27). Fellows will conduct research on the social foundations of state power in China.

Research Theme

Fellows will investigate how China’s evolving social stratification, informal institutions, and ideological changes sustain the Chinese Communist Party’s rule and maintain political control amid rapid economic growth and widening inequality.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute an independent research project aligned with the research theme.
  • Participate in workshops and collaborative projects led by Professors Wang and Zhou.
  • Present research findings in seminars and at the Fairbank Center community.
Learning & Engagement

Collaborate with Harvard and Boston‑area researchers working on contemporary China; engage with the Fairbank Center community.

Fellowship Details

Period:
August 1 2026 – July 31 2027. Stipend: $67,600 – $70,000 over 12 months. Additional $3,000 research funding available to each fellow.

Basic Qualifications
  • PhD in sociology, political science, economics, communication, history, area studies, or related field.
  • Strong working knowledge of Chinese and English.
  • Doctoral degree must be completed no later than July 1 2026; must not be more than five years beyond receipt of the degree at the start of the fellowship.
  • Harvard doctoral degree recipients are not eligible.
Additional Qualifications

Applicants should have research interests relevant to the 2026‑27 research theme, focusing on inequality, mobility, public opinion, governance, ideology, or compliance.
