Engineer Trainee/Assistant Engineer (Civil/Transportation) – NY HELPS, Region 10 – NYS Department of Transportation
Pay and CompensationBase pay range: $66,951.00 / yr – $ / yr.
Starting salary: $66,951 / yr for Engineer Trainee; $97,673 / yr for Assistant Engineer.
Maximum compensation: $107,621 / yr (includes geographic pay differential up to $13,500).
Additional geographic adjustments may apply:
Mid‑Hudson ($2,000) or Downstate ($4,000).
- Prepare Plans, Specifications & Estimate (PS&E) for highway‑related projects in accordance with NYSDOT procedures.
- Assist and coordinate production of all related studies, reports, and drawings for highway projects.
- Generate typical sections, profiles, work‑zone traffic control plans, general plans, utility and drainage plans, traffic‑control plans, pavement‑marking plans, erosion and sediment control plans, guide‑sign layouts, etc.
- Perform engineering calculations for highway design projects including alignments, inlet capacity, drainage, sign posts, cuts & fill volumes, etc.
- Prepare preliminary cost estimates, construction quantities, price analysis, and final cost estimates.
- Collect field data and conduct field inspections.
- Handle inquiries and requests regarding projects or safety issues from internal departments, state agencies, and the public.
- Liaise with third‑party entities occupying state right‑of‑way and affected by highway projects.
- Assist with structures inspections and related tasks.
Serve in a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
Minimum QualificationsSee NY HELPs program requirements. Candidates must meet open competitive minimum qualifications for the position, including:
- Either a bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology (fields listed below), or
- Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and one year of full‑time engineering experience.
As an Engineer Trainee, you will complete a 24‑month trainee program that leads to Assistant Engineer, Grade 20. Successful completion and FE certification may advance you earlier.
Assistant Engineer Qualifications- Proof of FE exam passage and a qualifying bachelor’s degree or higher (see list of eligible degrees), or
- Proof of FE exam passage and one year of full‑time qualifying engineering experience.
Qualifying degrees include:
Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, Construction Engineering Management, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics Engineering, Materials Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning & Engineering, Engineering Science with recognised concentration, etc.
Qualifying experience:
One year of full‑time engineering experience with transportation projects related to highways/roadways, railroads, bridges, airports, waterways, building structures, or traffic management and safety systems.
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis.
For the duration of the NY HELPs Program, the title may be filled via a non‑competitive appointment; all candidates must still meet the minimum qualifications of the title.
Employees hired under NY HELPs will have their non‑competitive employment status converted to competitive status without examination and will be eligible for promotions.
Educational credentials must be awarded by a U.S. accredited institution, or if foreign, must have independent verification of equivalency.
