Job Description Role overview
The Electrical Design Engineer is responsible for producing safe, compliant, and cost‑effective electrical designs for water and wastewater treatment projects. This includes LV power distribution, MCCs, ICA interfaces, standby generation, cabling, lighting, and integration with process and MEICA systems. The role supports feasibility, outline design, detailed design, construction support and commissioning phases.
Key Responsibilities Electrical System Design- Develop electrical engineering designs for water and wastewater assets including:
- LV power distribution systems
- Motor control centres (MCCs)
- Variable speed drives (VSDs)
- Control panels & ICA integration
- Pumping systems
- Chemical dosing and treatment process equipment
- Earthing and bonding systems
- Cable calculations, routing and containment
- Lighting, small power and emergency systems
- Standby generators and UPS systems (where applicable)
- Prepare design deliverables such as:
- Single line diagrams (SLDs)
- Load schedules and discrimination studies
- Cable sizing calculations
- Control philosophies
- Electrical layouts and schematics
- Equipment specifications and datasheets
- Bills of materials
- Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, including:
- BS EN standards
- Water industry design specifications
- Wiring regulations (BS 7671)
- CDM regulations
- Functional safety requirements (where applicable)
- Apply safe‑by‑design principles and participate in HAZOP, HAZCOM and risk reviews.
- Conduct design reviews, value engineering and optimisation.
- Work closely with civil, mechanical, ICA and process engineers to ensure integrated MEICA designs.
- Provide electrical input at all project stages (feasibility, outline design, detailed design, construction).
- Support the procurement process by preparing technical specifications and evaluating supplier proposals.
- Provide design support during installation, testing and commissioning.
- Engage with subcontractors, OEMs and supply chain partners.
- Produce high‑quality engineering documentation and ensure version control and traceability.
- Contribute to O&M manuals, asset information and as‑built documentation.
- Ensure designs meet internal and client quality processes and digital delivery requirements (e.g. BIM Level
2).
- Contribute to development of standard designs, templates and best practices.
- Support adoption of new technology such as smart MCCs, digital monitoring and energy‑efficient solutions.
- Identify opportunities for optimisation and carbon reduction.
- Strong background in electrical engineering within the water/wastewater industry or similar process industries.
- Experience designing LV electrical systems and MCCs for treatment works or pumping stations.
- Competence in electrical calculations, discrimination studies and cable sizing.
- Ability to interpret P&IDs, process drawings and equipment data sheets.
- Proficiency with electrical design software/tools (AutoCAD, Solid Works).
- Understanding of ICA systems and coordination with control/automation engineers.
- Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in multi‑disciplinary teams.
- Experience working with major UK water companies and AMP frameworks.
- Knowledge of DNO/G99 requirements for generation or large motor loads.
- Experience with hazardous area classifications (ATEX/DSEAR).
- Understanding of digital design platforms (e.g. Revit, BIM 360, CDEs).
- Experience in site surveys, testing, commissioning or inspections of electrical installations.
- Degree or HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Knowledge of BS 7671 and relevant electrical standards.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Chartered or working towards Chartership (IET or similar).
- EUSR Clean Water Hygiene.
- COMPEX (for sites with hazardous areas).
- IOSH/NEBOSH training or other health & safety qualifications.
- Strong problem‑solving and analytical mindset.
- Detail‑oriented and committed to producing quality work.
