Position Purpose
The Mechanical Fabrication Apprentice will learn the skills and knowledge required to fabricate and assemble, mechanical components and structures. Under the supervision of experienced craftspeople, the apprentice will develop competence in metal fabrication techniques, machinery operation, workplace safety, and quality standards.
Main responsibilities Fabrication & Assembly- Assist in the fabrication of metal components using cutting, forming, welding, and machining techniques
- Read and interpret basic engineering drawings, schematics, and work instructions
- Measure, mark, and prepare materials for fabrication
- Assemble mechanical components, sub-assemblies, and structures in accordance with engineering drawings and build instructions
- Fit bearings, shafts, fasteners, seals, brackets, and mechanical fittings
- Use hand tools, torque tools, and measuring equipment correctly
- Check alignment, fit, and function of assembled components
- Assist with fault finding, adjustment, and rework of mechanical assemblies
- Learn and assist with welding processes (e.g. MIG, TIG, Stick) as appropriate
- Operate fabrication equipment such as presses, grinders, drills, saws, and CNC or manual machines under supervision
- Perform basic machining and finishing tasks
- Follow all workplace health and safety procedures at all times
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly
- Maintain a clean and organized work area
- Learn quality control procedures and ensure work meets required standards
- Attend required off-the-job training or trade school
- Actively participate in skills development and assessments
- Take direction from supervisors and seek feedback to improve performance
