The successful candidate will join a growing science program committed to impartiality-minded teaching, hands-on learning, and community engagement.

We seek a dynamic educator and scholar with a passion for undergraduate instruction and mentorship, who can teach microbiology and immunology curriculum and contribute to life science-related courses and research opportunities. Candidates should be able to teach lower-division and upper-division microbiology and immunology courses and labs.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach 24 semester credits per academic year (typically 3 courses with 1 course release for service and research activities per semester), including but not limited to lecture and lab courses in microbiology, virology, immunology, infectious diseases, cancer biology, and general biology.
  • Develop and deliver high-quality instruction to a multicultural student population, including first-generation college students and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities.
  • Participate in curriculum development, academic advising, and mentoring of undergraduate students.
  • Engage in scholarly activities, which may include discipline-based education research with undergraduates, or community-engaged scholarship.
  • Contribute to service at the division, campus, and/or system level, including committee participation and program assessment.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff in interdisciplinary and cross-campus initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Microbiology, Immunology, Life Sciences, Biology or closely related field from an accredited institution (ABD candidates will be considered, but the Ph.D must be conferred prior to the date of appointment).
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to teach microbiology and biology courses effectively at the undergraduate level.
  • Evidence of or potential for engaging undergraduates in research, mentorship, or high-impact teaching practices.
  • Commitment to serving a varied student body and promoting all-encompassing excellence in teaching and scholarship.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience teaching at a primarily undergraduate institution or similar setting.
  • Experience developing and teaching laboratory courses.
  • Interest in curriculum innovation and the use of evidence-based instructional practices.
  • Experience mentoring undergraduates in research, especially students from underserved backgrounds.
  • Background or interest in interdisciplinary teaching, such as the integration of microbiology with environmental science, health sciences, or sustainable food systems.
  • Postdoctoral experience in basic or clinical immunology, bacterial ecology, bacteria-viral infections, microbial systems, environmental microbiology, infectious disease, or cancer research.
  • Familiarity with Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander cultures or commitment to place-based and culturally sustaining pedagogy.
