Keonepoko Elementary – Grade PK-6 Special Education Teacher (Job , 2025‑04652)

Hawaiʻi State Department of Education is seeking a qualified Special Education Teacher to provide specialized instruction and related services to students with disabilities in grades Pre‑K through 6. The candidate will ensure delivery of a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) and support inclusive educational practices.

Responsibilities
  • Instructional Services
    • Provide specially designed instruction aligned with students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in Pre‑K–Grade 6 settings.
    • Implement standards‑based instruction aligned with Hawai‘i Content and Performance Standards (HCPS) and Common Core State Standards.
    • Utilize evidence‑based instructional strategies, interventions, and accommodations.
    • Monitor, collect, and analyze student performance data to evaluate progress toward IEP goals.
    • Prepare progress reports and maintain accurate instructional records.
  • IEP Development & Compliance
    • Develop, implement, and monitor IEPs in compliance with IDEA, HAR Chapter 60, and HIDOE Special Education Procedural Guide.
    • Participate as required member of IEP, eligibility, reevaluation, and transition meetings.
    • Ensure procedural safeguards, timelines, and documentation requirements are met.
    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team to determine appropriate services, supports, accommodations, and placement.
  • Collaboration & Communication
    • Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusive practices.
    • Consult with related service providers, educational assistants, and support staff.
    • Communicate regularly with parents/legal guardians regarding progress and needs.
    • Act as case manager for assigned students as designated.
  • Classroom Management & Student Support
    • Establish and maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment.
    • Implement Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
    • Support social‑emotional development, independence, and functional skills.
  • Professional Responsibilities
    • Participate in professional development, faculty meetings, and school improvement initiatives.
    • Maintain compliance with HIDOE confidentiality, ethical standards, and professional conduct expectations.
    • Collaborate with school administrators and district special education staff.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal or designee.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree (Education or related field).
    • Valid Special Education license (PK‑6 or equivalent) from the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Master’s degree in Special Education or related field.
    • Experience in inclusive, co‑teaching, or MTSS environments.
  • Desired Experience
    • Classroom experience in a K‑12 school setting.
    • Experience working with students with autism spectrum disorder, emotional/behavioral disabilities, or multiple disabilities.
    • Knowledge of special education instructional strategies and assessment practices.
    • Strong communication, collaboration, and case‑management skills.
    • Commitment to culturally responsive practices and educational equity.
  • Desired Knowledge
    • Planning and facilitating Individualized Education Plan meetings.
    • Data analysis and instruction‑informed decision making.
    • Professional judgment in managing daily responsibilities.
    • Effective record maintenance and compliance with deadlines.
    • Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
