Title:
Chemist
- Chemist at a growth‑oriented energy company
- Opportunity to learn and apply knowledge of established quality control and operating procedures as well as good laboratory techniques
- Delivers operational excellence by planning, organizing work, and assisting in the direction and supervision of the refinery laboratory
- Reporting to the Laboratory Manager
- Develop, perform and train other Technicians on new test methods as needed to support the refinery operation.
- Perform a variety of non‑routine tests as needed.
- Assist the Laboratory Manager in the supervision of the laboratory staff and operations. Acts as the Laboratory Manager when coverage is needed.
- Assist in optimizing use of resources and workload with Operations, Oils Planning and Crew Leaders.
- Coordinate activities for Technicians by interacting with the Crew Leaders (primarily) and Technicians as needed.
- Develop and maintain the Quality Assurance programs in the laboratory. Utilize SQC methods to flag deviations from accurate results and correct the situation before there are significant impacts on the business.
- Use the Quality Assurance/Quality Control programs to proactively maintain lab results within desirable accuracies.
- Must be available to work night shifts and conduct chemist duties on the rare occasion a technician will be working alone.
- Must be available to work after hours when necessary.
- Must be on‑call for some non‑work hours/days.
- Perform initial troubleshooting of instruments and coordinate repairs, if needed.
- Develop troubleshooting skills of Crew Leaders and Lab Technicians.
- Ensure laboratory equipment and solutions are properly maintained. Develops and administers maintenance and calibration procedures. Directs troubleshooting when results are questioned.
- Ensures that calibration and maintenance programs are adhered to as required by military contracts. Updates quality control procedures as required.
- Represents the laboratory at industry‑sponsored meetings, seminars, etc.
- Evaluates new methods and equipment for possible implementation in the laboratory.
- Develops and maintains FTIR models.
- Assist in the administration of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Controls and orders all laboratory supplies.
- Develops the training program for laboratory technicians in testing procedures.
- This position requires organization and communication skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks while meeting deadlines and production requirements.
- Communicate frequently and effectively with staff.
- Regular schedule includes weekends, holidays and on call 24/7 for emergencies.

- Bachelor's degree in chemistry or equivalent and/or experience, in lieu of degree, preferred.
- Must have strong analytical skills.
- Knowledgeable with modern analytical instrumentation, including gas chromatography required.
- Must be able to communicate in oral and written format with all levels of employees within the organization.
- Must be proficient with MS Office Suite software.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Chemist experience in a refinery laboratory preferred.
- Knowledge of the ASTM methods used for petroleum testing desired.
- A minimum of two years of experience in a laboratory preferred.
