Environmental Health Safety (EHS) and Facilities Specialist

Company Overview: Nelumbo is a science and technology company focused on generating advanced materials through surface modification. Through proprietary processes, Ice Nein® and Mineral®, Nelumbo is delivering coated heat exchangers for HVAC‑R systems to reduce the impact of ice on day‑to‑day operations and providing textile solutions that eliminate PFAS from the textile supply chain, replacing it with more sustainable, higher performance materials.
Kuraray, a Japanese manufacturer of chemicals, resins, and fibers, recently acquired Nelumbo to accelerate the deployment of the technology.
Position Summary: Nelumbo is seeking a highly motivated and capable EHS and Facilities Specialist to support our team as we work to scale‑up and industrialize the technology. The ideal candidate will be organized, diligent and agile, possessing the ability to take on diverse EHS and facilities responsibilities. Exceptional communication skills are necessary since this role interfaces across different cultures, time zones, and external companies.
This role will help to establish and manage safety, environmental health, and facilities directives for Nelumbo.
Nelumbo is a UC Berkeley spin‑out company commercializing advanced materials to increase sustainability in the built environment and consumer goods. Our materials leverage nanoscale features to enhance the surface performance of materials in different environments. This role will support the development of materials for primarily polymer‑based consumer goods. We are a team of highly motivated engineers and scientists with insatiable curiosities and a strong desire to enable completely new classes of products through novel technologies.
The processes to create our materials are multistep immersions in either batch or continuous process lines involving proprietary metal‑organic chemistry and are currently being evaluated at commercial manufacturing scale.
- Manage EHS, facility, and contractor relationships
- Organize and submit EHS reports, applications, submittals
- Identify and complete facility related deliverables
- Identify opportunities to improve safety, sustainability and environmental health across Nelumbo businesses
- Manage process chemical and waste inventories for metal treatment and textile finishing operations
- Manage and communicate EHS project deliverables in a timely manner
- Evaluate and conduct EHS inspections, trainings, reporting and assessments, critically evaluate and implement safety policies
- Exceptional communication skills
- 3‑5 years experience with EHS in a chemistry wet‑lab, metals plating, coatings, or surface finishing environment
- 3‑5 years experience with personnel safety programs and training
- Certified Haz Woper is a plus
- New facility planning and commissioning experience
- Demonstrated project management skills
