Central to the care delivery system, the Staff Nurse interprets the plan of medical care, assesses patients, and makes clinical decision‑making regarding nursing care. The role ensures safe, competent nursing care for individual patients and for groups of patients.

• Take report from the previous shift and provide a comprehensive hand‑off to the incoming shift, including patient condition, diagnosis, treatments, procedures, and care plan.
• Perform assessments and reassessments of patients.
• Review ancillary service reports, communicate abnormal results to physicians, and notify the supervisor when ancillary services are incomplete.
• Interpret the plan of medical care, evaluate patients, and devise patient care plans.
• Maintain proper control of medicines, equipment, and supplies specific to the assigned unit.
• Plan discharge of patients considering all available resources and continuum‑of‑care needs.
• Refer patients to chaplain, social worker, and agencies as required.
• Provide a safe and secure environment for the patient.
• Implement the patient care plan by assigning tasks to nursing and non‑nursing personnel, continually assessing and evaluating patient care and responses to nursing care.
• Perform nursing treatments, procedures, and total patient care, often requiring expert skill and judgment.
• Accompany physicians on rounds, communicate pertinent information, assist with treatments and procedures, or delegate as appropriate.
• Performs specialized procedures for which training and supervised experience have been received.
• Provide effective patient and family education.
• Document pertinent findings, plan of care, and evaluation of care in the medical record.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living to meet basic human needs.
• Prepare and maintain reports, charts, records, and forms required by hospital, state, and federal regulations.
• Accompany patients transferred to other medical facilities.
• Notify supervisor, doctor, and/or family/guardian of changes in patient condition.
• Observe and evaluate work performed by LPNs, nursing aides, ORTs, and clerks to ensure compliance with the plan of care and hospital guidelines.
• Participate in teaching activities for other hospital personnel and nursing students.
• Participate in the orientation of new employees.
• Participate in committee meetings as requested.
• Attend in‑service programs per contract.
• Assume responsibility for personal professional development.
• Assist in the development, review, and revision of nursing policies and procedures.
• Respect the dignity and confidentiality of all patient matters.
• Perform other related duties as required within the scope of the job classification.

• Graduation from a state‑accredited or approved school of nursing.
• Licensed in the state of employment.

Must possess the physical abilities to endure prolonged standing and walking and the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull; exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements exceed those for heavy work.
