The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting two Professional Engineers in Bridge Design. This position is a professional structural design engineer responsible for final design work, design review, and final bridge plan checking on a project level with minimal guidance. The Engineer may also be assigned preliminary design work, which may be done in collaboration with the Bridge Area Engineer or assigned based on expected results.
Since bridge design affects public safety, design work must be performed with a licensed professional engineer in responsible charge. The Engineer should be fully competent in conventional bridge design and have working knowledge of seismic analysis and preliminary design requirements.
- Perform final design work, design reviews, and final bridge plan checking on assigned projects.
- Handle preliminary design work when assigned, in coordination with the Bridge Area Engineer or per expected results.
- Ensure all design work is in responsible charge by a licensed Professional Engineer.
- Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program that includes civil structural engineering courses in structural analysis, steel design, and reinforced concrete design, or an equivalent field. - Experience:
Minimum of 4 years in structural analysis, steel design, and reinforced concrete design. - Licensure:
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Montana. If holding a PE in another state, eligibility to obtain Montana PE registration through Comity within 6 months of hire will be considered. - Alternative qualifications:
Graduate degrees with concentrations in structural analysis/design will be evaluated case by case.
- Thorough knowledge of Civil Engineering theory, methods, and practices related to bridge structural design; familiarity with AASHTO Design Specifications and bridge design standards.
- Ability to evaluate engineering calculations and contract documents for clarity, accuracy, completeness, and constructability; apply engineering judgment to interpretation of design guidelines and standards.
- Skill in preparing calculations, reports, and documentation; proficiency with office engineering tools, computers, and calculators; strong written and verbal communication skills.
