Position TitleCultural Resource Specialist )
AgencyConstruction and Facilities Management Office (CFMO), Montana Army National Guard.
OverviewCFMO is the principal advisor to the Montana Adjutant General regarding all real property, facilities, construction, and environmental management programs for the Montana Army National Guard. The position will oversee the management of cultural resources within MTARNG training ranges at Fort Harrison and Limestone Hills, along with historic facilities and structures throughout Montana.
Duties- Plans and develops cultural resource assessments to meet program objectives and support MTARNG actions and mission readiness.
- Conducts monitoring, surveys, and studies on DMA lands utilized by MTARNG.
- Engages in ongoing consultation with Tribes as required by Federal law to support the identification and protection of cultural resources and areas of Tribal significance.
- Examines proposed Federal and State regulations to determine their impact on MTARNG and DMA cultural resources and establishes policies and timelines to meet the intent of new regulations.
- Maintains and monitors cultural resource management information systems to provide accurate and timely information and tracking of resources and projects.
- Bachelor’s level degree in history, historic architecture, archaeology, or architectural history.
- Master’s Degree in any of the previous fields preferred.
- Three years of relevant work experience, including writing and research.
- Other combinations of education and experience may be substituted.
- Pass a Background and Fingerprint check.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, and regulations including federal (NHPA, NEPA) and state laws.
- Ability to learn and implement DoD, DA, and ARNG guidance, along with various Executive Orders, Section 106, Section 110 compliance and coordination with SHPOs and THPOs.
- Strong and effective written and verbal communication, critical thinking, and problem‑solving skills.
- Skilled in conducting research, use of databases, and interpreting findings.
Work is performed both in an office environment and in the field. Requires periodic statewide travel for site visits, field work, and training. Approximately 45% of the time spent in the field. Fieldwork requires average strength and stamina, ability to work in adverse weather conditions, considerable walking on uneven terrain, operating and negotiating four‑wheel drive vehicles and heavy equipment on rugged terrain, lifting and carrying equipment and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds, and exposure to moderate risks that require safety precautions.
