Environmental Health Program Specialist

The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has a career opportunity within the Public Health and Safety Division in Helena.

This position is in the Epidemiology and Scientific Support Bureau and is responsible for developing and coordinating environmental public health education and program activities for the Montana Toxicology and Environmental Public Health Section.

The Program Specialist develops and administers statewide public health programs in response to state needs and federal grant solicitations. Responsibilities include but not limited to:
Administering and implementing our childhood Choose Safe Places and Lead Poisoning Prevention programs;
Developing and coordinating evidence-based health education and risk communication activities;
Coordinating and assist managing health surveillance and data collection systems to track, analyze and evaluate programs and services; and Planning and coordinating program outreach, training, and support.

• Knowledge of public health practice and implementation including disease prevention and control.

• Skill in researching and developing public health interventions.

• Knowledge of program management.

• Meet minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in health science, health education, behavioral or social science, or a related degree.

  • Two years of job-related experience in health programming or health education.

  • Other combinations of directly related education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  • Preferred:

    • Master’s degree in public health, environmental health or environmental sciences, or a closely related degree.

This position may be eligible for partial teleworkwithin the state of Montana.

Specific conditions will be provided by the supervisor and must adhere to state policy.

This position may be eligible for a statutory $1.00 an hour base pay increase effective July 1, 2026.

This position is grant funded by two grants: 50% funded through September 29, 2026, and 50% funded through March 31, 2028, with the possibility of grants being extended.
