Wildland Restoration Team Leader
Position within the Montana Conservation Corps (MCC) aimed at leading adult crews on nightly conservation projects across Bozeman, Helena, Kalispell, and Missoula, MT. The role combines field work, crew leadership, and professional development throughout a 3‑month term.
Responsibilities- Lead 3‑4 adult crew members on 4‑9 day overnight projects, adapting to crew types (solo, co‑leader, assistant).
- Facilitate crew growth by managing conflict, providing guidance, and ensuring high‑quality project service.
- Plan and execute wilderness restoration tasks, including invasive species treatment, stream restoration, and habitat improvement.
- Coordinate with stakeholders (private, government, non‑profit) to support large‑scale land conservation efforts.
- Maintain safety standards, perform physical tasks (hiking, backpacking, tool use) and manage project logistics in varied terrain and weather.
- Structured 3‑month leadership program covering communication, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and facilitation.
- Technical training in chainsaw/crosscut use, defensive driving, Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA), Leave No Trace, habitat management, and natural resource stewardship.
- Living allowance of $1,360 biweekly ($2,720 p/month) before taxes;
Ameri Corps Education Award up to $5,176.50 upon completion. - Health insurance at no cost, 24/7 member assistance program.
- Food per diem during projects, access to pro‑deals, and potential housing support.
- Opportunity for federal hiring preference for future federal roles.
- High school diploma or GED; willingness to obtain GED if not already earned.
- U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or national qualified for U.S. service.
- Positive criminal history check and valid driver’s license; ability to drive company vehicle.
- Physical capability to hike 3‑20 miles daily, lift up to 35 lbs, and carry up to 70 lbs backpacks.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to obtain or hold Wilderness Advanced First Aid/CPR certification.
- Commitment to 10‑day overnight trips, long hours in all weather, and full term.
- Strong service ethic, growth mindset, motivational leadership.
