Help protect the environment at the heart of the UK's defence operations. At Babcock we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as an Environmental Practitioner at our HMNB Clyde Faslane site.

The role

As an Environmental Practitioner, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You'll play a vital role in supporting submarine and naval operations by ensuring environmental compliance, driving continual improvement and helping protect the environment across a nationally significant defence site. Working alongside operational teams and key stakeholders, you'll influence environmental performance, support sustainability objectives and contribute to projects that have a real impact on national security and critical infrastructure.

This is an excellent opportunity to broaden your experience within a unique, highly regulated environment while developing your career with a leading engineering and defence organisation.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct environmental audits and compliance assessments to support environmental legislation, permits and ISO 14001 requirements.
  • Manage and continuously improve the Environmental Management System, ensuring processes and documentation remain effective and compliant.
  • Support United Kingdom Emissions Trading Scheme reporting, environmental permitting activities and performance monitoring.
  • Investigate environmental incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
  • Provide environmental advice, deliver awareness training and drive environmental improvement initiatives across the site.

This role is full time, 36 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements, working an 8‑day fortnight pattern. Working hours alternate between Monday to Thursday, 07:15 – 16:45 one week, and Tuesday to Friday, 07:15 – 16:45 the following week.

Agile working may be available to employees in some instances, applying the principles of fairness and consistency whilst ensuring that the overriding business needs can be appropriately met. We are happy to consider flexible, blended working, including part‑time, condensed hours, and job sharing. Please ask about alternative patterns of work at interview.

Essential Experience
  • Proven experience conducting environmental audits and assessing compliance against environmental legislation, permits and ISO 14001 requirements.
  • Strong working knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems, including maintaining and improving environmental processes and documentation.
  • Experience supporting United Kingdom Emissions Trading Scheme reporting, environmental permitting and regulatory compliance activities.
  • Experience investigating environmental incidents, undertaking root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions.
  • Ability to engage and influence stakeholders, provide environmental guidance and support continuous improvement within a regulated operational environment.
Qualifications
  • Higher National Diploma, degree or equivalent qualification in Environmental Studies, Environmental Management or a related discipline.
  • ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Auditor or Lead Auditor qualification.
  • Knowledge of the United Kingdom Emissions Trading Scheme and environmental compliance obligations within a regulated environment is desirable.
  • Incident investigation training or qualification, such as Kelvin Top Set or equivalent methodology, is desirable.

Many of the positions within our company are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions.
