BAM UK & Ireland is recruiting a Senior Structural Design Engineer to join the Design sector of the business, being responsible for performing and managing simple and complex analysis, design and documentation of various structures.

Responsibilities
  • Technical Delivery – Perform and manage structural analysis, design, and documentation for a variety of structures.
  • Carry out feasibility studies and technical audits.
  • Deliver innovative, sustainable, safe, practical, and intelligent engineering solutions aligned to project stage and type.
  • Design confidently in all materials to Eurocodes, and demonstrate strong knowledge of current guidelines, legislation, and Building Regulations.
  • Produce detailed structural specifications and project documentation.
  • Prepare calculations for Local Authority/Building Control approval.
  • Ensure all designs meet health, safety, and environmental requirements including compliance with CDM regulations.
  • Software & Technical Proficiency – Ideally proficient in Tekla Structural Designer.
  • Demonstrable experience in foundation design, steelwork design, and reinforced concrete design and detailing.
  • Strong capability with relevant engineering software and BIM for coordinated multi‑discipline project delivery.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement – Work closely with other project engineers and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Liaise with site construction teams regarding day‑to‑day project delivery.
  • Attend client and progress meetings; prepare minutes, reports, and presentations.
  • Collaborate with architects, MEP teams, technologists, and other construction professionals.
  • Support sustainability initiatives and promote industry best practice.
  • Leadership & Development – Direct junior and subordinate staff; contribute to their technical and professional development.
  • Advocate knowledge sharing across project teams.
  • Assist with business development and contribute to bid submissions.
  • General Duties – Undertake typical structural engineering activities across all RIBA stages.
  • Conduct site QA/inspections.
  • Contribute to the management of multi‑disciplinary projects from proposal through to full design and construction.
  • Carry out any additional duties reasonably required within the scope of the post.
Team & Location

Your team – Report directly to the Structural Associates and work with all other design disciplines within BAM Design to ensure a coordinated approach to building design and the wider BAM business units. Also assist and manage junior reports and assist with business development activities.

Location:

Any UK office. This is a hybrid role requiring occasional work from head office in Hemel Hempstead. BAM operates a flexible working policy.

What do you bring to the role?
  • Education & Professional Standing – Minimum 5 years’ post‑graduate experience.
  • Chartered Engineer (IStruct

    E or ICE) or actively working towards chartership.
  • Commitment to relevant professional institute CPD and development.
  • Technical & Professional – Demonstrable experience in a similar structural engineering role.
  • Proven experience delivering technical specifications and managing projects across all RIBA stages.
  • Strong knowledge of Building Regulations, Eurocodes, and relevant design standards.
  • Experience working on large multidisciplinary projects, ideally across Education and Commercial sectors.
  • Understanding and/or experience of BIM for complex construction projects.
  • Key Skills – Proactive, self‑motivated, and a strong team player.
  • Excellent time management and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills—both verbal and illustrative.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to plan and deliver work independently.
  • Confidence using new technologies, tools, and engineering software.
