A Senior Scientist opportunity has arisen within the innovation function of an established detection technology business. This is a genuinely research‑led role, sitting at the earliest stages of the product lifecycle — from concept and feasibility through to proof of concept and new technology evaluation. The Senior Scientist will work as a core member of a multidisciplinary innovation team, taking ownership of scientific work packages from initial design through to experimental execution and conclusion. Day-to-day, this means designing and building experimental equipment, planning and carrying out original research, and critically evaluating data to inform product and technology development. You will provide technical guidance to colleagues across engineering and product functions, lead internal and external technical discussions, and contribute meaningfully to project planning and review cycles.

The Senior Scientist will also play a supervisory role, overseeing the work of other scientists within the team, identifying opportunities for external collaboration, and providing hands‑on support to off‑site trials as needed. This is a role that rewards independent thinking, self‑direction, and the confidence to propose new ideas without waiting to be asked.

This role sits within a well‑established, internationally operating technology business focused on detection solutions for security and safety applications. You would be joining a collaborative, expert team with access to significant resources and a clear purpose behind their work.

• A PhD in chemistry or physics (or a relevant master's degree with applicable commercial experience), plus industry‑based laboratory experience in a relevant discipline such as analytical chemistry, detection, or forensics
• Hands‑on experience with analytical instrumentation design and development, ideally within spectrometry — ion mobility, mass spectrometry, or related techniques; backgrounds in spectroscopy, chromatography, or fields involving trace detection or atmospheric chemistry are also of strong interest
• Demonstrable ability to design experiments independently, interpret complex data, and propose original avenues of research with minimal direction
• Strong communication skills, with the confidence to lead technical discussions, present findings to varied audiences, and engage effectively with both scientific peers and senior stakeholders
