Position Summary:

Provide resources for breastfeeding information in the clinic, as well as to act as a liaison between the State breastfeeding coordinator and local agency staff. Breastfeeding Coordinator will promote health and nutrition for women, infants and children in the WIC program by determining eligibility, completing certifications and providing nutrition and breastfeeding education to program participants.

  • Meet with the State Breastfeeding Coordinator and/or other local agency coordinators as scheduled by the State agency.
  • Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of breastfeeding promotion and support activities and staff training.
  • Stay current with the latest breastfeeding information and informing staff of new recommendations.
  • Identify, coordinate and collaborate with community breastfeeding resources. Develop effective, cooperative relationships with colleagues, participants and the community.
  • Monitor local agency breastfeeding rates.
  • Perform the roles and responsibilities of a CPA/Clerk.
  • Train in Lactation at the minimum of 35 or more hours including:
    Breastfeeding Promotion, Nutrition and breastfeeding, Barriers to Breastfeeding, Contraindications to Breastfeeding, Anatomy and Physiology of Human Lactation, Breastfeeding Management (early to late post-partum), Support Referrals for Breastfeeding Management Counseling, and Breastfeeding Techniques and Devices. Training must be completed within one year of hire and once every five (5) years thereafter.
  • Determine initial and ongoing eligibility of potential participants according to federal, state and local policies.
  • Conduct nutrition assessment, evaluate collected information and assign appropriate risk codes/high risk codes.
  • Collect and evaluate diet and medical history for conditions relevant to nutritional status. Provide nutrition education/high-risk nutrition education appropriate to participant level of understanding. Facilitate and promote healthy parenting behavior related to nutrition.
  • Promote, educate on and encourage breastfeeding with pregnant and post-partum participants.
  • Obtain and evaluate blood samples relevant to the measurement of hemoglobin/hematocrit. Obtain and evaluate height and weight measurements.
  • Complete all certification components and issue nutrition benefits to eligible participants.
  • Provide service in a manner that demonstrates and incorporates cultural competence.
  • Refer WIC participants to appropriate professional and social service agencies.
  • Assist colleagues with meeting local and state WIC program objectives.
  • Attend and participate in required self-development and continuing education opportunities.
  • Transport clinic supplies and equipment as requested.
  • Promote WIC through periodic outreach activities in the community.
  • Protect all confidential information, company property and electronic data. Comply with safety rules.
  • Other related duties as directed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of topics relevant to maternal and child health. Knowledge of the concepts of cultural competence.
  • Knowledge of wellness, prevention and health promotion principles. Knowledge of nutrition principles.
