Automation Systems Technician — Flooring Trim Production
Base pay range: $22.00/hr - $27.00/hr
Day in the role
You start your shift by reviewing the production schedule, confirming materials, and preparing the automated lines that cut, profile, trim, wrap, and package flooring trims. You load the correct tooling, perform calibrations, and enter product parameters at the HMI so each run begins within spec. First‑article inspections follow—measuring, checking finish, and verifying dimensions before you release the line to full speed.
Throughout the day, you monitor equipment performance and product quality, making proactive adjustments to keep throughput steady. When mechanical, electrical, or process issues pop up, you diagnose quickly to minimize downtime, handle routine fixes yourself, and partner with maintenance for complex repairs. You document batch details, quality checks, downtime events, and maintenance activity in alignment with QMS procedures, and you complete routine preventive tasks—cleaning, lubrication, and visual inspections—to keep everything running smoothly.
Quality and engineering count on your feedback. You collaborate on corrective actions, support continuous improvement to reduce waste and variability, and mentor junior operators so skills and consistency rise across the team. Safety is non‑negotiable: you model PPE use and follow lockout/tagout precisely.
- Set up automated lines for new runs: tooling changes, calibration, and parameter entry at machine controls.
- Operate and oversee systems for cutting, profiling, trimming, wrapping, and packaging flooring trim products.
- Verify material setup; perform in‑process and final inspections to meet visual, dimensional, and quality requirements.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and process issues to sustain flow and reduce downtime.
- Execute minor mechanical adjustments; coordinate with maintenance on larger repairs.
- Accurately complete batch records, quality checks, downtime logs, and maintenance reports per QMS.
- Conduct routine preventive maintenance: cleaning, lubrication, and component inspections.
- Work with quality/engineering on process improvements and corrective actions for nonconformities.
- Champion safety practices, including PPE and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Train and support junior operators; participate in continuous improvement to boost efficiency and consistency.
- High school diploma or GED required; technical/vocational certification preferred.
- 5–7 years operating automated or CNC‑controlled machinery in manufacturing; experience with flooring, wood, or building materials preferred.
- Strong mechanical, electrical, and process troubleshooting capability.
- Proficiency reading technical drawings/blueprints and using machine manuals.
- Experience in an ISO 9001 or similar QMS environment preferred.
- Competent with calipers, tape measures, and gauges.
- Computer literate; familiar with HMI (Human‑Machine Interface) systems.
- Detail‑oriented with a strong quality and safety mindset.
- Self‑directed and collaborative in a team setting.
- Stand and operate machinery for long periods (8–12 hours).
- Lift and move materials up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent bending, reaching, and repetitive hand motions.
- Work in typical manufacturing conditions with noise, dust, and temperature fluctuations.
- Full‑time; shifts may include days, evenings, or weekends based on production needs.
