Heavy Equipment Operator

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Operates one or more types of motorized heavy equipment (i.e., bulldozer, front end loader, roll‑off trucks, tractor trailer trucks, farm tractor, mowers and/or Track hoe), dump truck skid steer, wheeled excavator, weed eater, chainsaw, as assigned, to spread, pack, and load refuse and debris.
• Assists in directing patrons and/or controlling disposal of refuse at transfer station site.
• Assists with compost duties as needed.
• Loads metal into trailer with grapple.
• Assists with HHW and Paint events and assists with foam recycling duties as needed.
• Performs responsible semi‑skilled work in the operation of one or more types of motorized heavy equipment to dispose of refuse at the solid waste facility and performs related work as required.
• Work is performed under regular supervision.
• Work hours may be variable due to unforeseen objectives until the job is completed.
• Reports to the Solid Waste Supervisor.

• General knowledge of the operation of motorized equipment used at the closed landfill and transfer station.
• Some knowledge of mowing and trimming equipment.
• General knowledge of occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of heavy equipment.
• Some knowledge of modern techniques, rules, and regulations used in the operation of a landfill.
• Ability to operate a variety of motorized equipment used at the closed landfill and transfer station.
• Ability to perform minor maintenance on heavy motorized equipment.
• Ability to follow oral instructions.
• Ability to attend work regularly.
• Must have a valid NC driver's license.
